What's new

New Kid, New Toy, wallet frightened.

Been doing the DE thing for about 2 months, but always knew it would be a gateway. Plus I seemed to be having a hell of a time with my Muhle R89 tearing up my face. All due to bad tecnhnique essentially.

Finally decided I wanted to try a straight and pulled the trigger.

Well....she landed:)

Phil from the Classic Edge was also nice enough to throw in a 3" bridle table strop because he didn't want "the new guy" cutting his hanging one. Pure class I tell you. Can't say enough about him/them.

Soooooo......post first shave report:

- You all have the dexterity of super humans. Building ships in bottles should be a prerequisite skill for shaving with a straight!!!

- I needed a Whiskey and a cigarette post shave as I have never been more focused in my entire life. I used to throw people out of planes for fun.....I think I was more nervous today then on my first skydive.

- I'm guessing three months before I figure out how to shave anything other than my cheeks with some form of proficiency, specifically the left side!

- One tiny nick is all I have to show:)

- Cleanup with a my DE was required, but funny enough I noticed that my trouble spots were waaaaay easier. A by product of lather sitting on them for the better part of an hour I assume ;)

Shave two (Sunday Night):

- Waaaaaay better shave, specifically on the right side. More confident strokes lead to an easier time cutting hair.

- I must be stropping correctly as the razor seems as sharp as ever. Have moved to my hanging bridle and despite the fear of nicking it, this is an easier process and with a better draw.

- Left hand still terrifying, still had to DE finish two small spots on my chin.....but.....FIRST EVER IRRITATION/BURN FREE SHAVE!!!!!!!! :) :)

- DE Head shave and finishing passes are now at lighting speed, I feel like I'm driving a race car around my face! I think something about using the straight has really hit home what "no pressure" actually means.

All told, quite happy with how it went and I can't wait to do it again, and again......and again:)

That's one hell of a first blade my friend!

Welcome!

Keep it up. Sounds like you're doing fine and you're on the right path.

Heads up - stay focused. You'll bleed less.

That is awesome - good progress. As you practice more and more, it will become more intuitive, but try not to hurry up/speed up too much. Since there is no "guard" on a str8, it is extremely easy to get a good cut :blushing:

Fantastic set up and razor, great to hear that you are enjoying the shaves. Let me know when you are looking for stuff to do your first refurbish... it IS coming you know. :thumbup1:

Woah, go easy on me fellas. I need to stop the wallet bleeding after the first few months of rampant purchasing. Once I figure out how to A) Shave with some proficiency B) sufficiently dull this edge and bring it back via CrOx on balsa and strop I'm sure the next step will be stones before refurbs yes?

Hell of a first razor. Hand in there it does take time but once mastered its a joy.

I call dibs if he decides straight shaving is not for him-LOL

I'm honoured - A meme in recognition of my first straight ;) I have AS and Soaps covered, strops and razors are what frightens me. I believe a gentlemen on the Wicked Edge said it best when he said YMMV stood for "Your Money Might Vanish"
