What's new

New here, new to SR

Hello,

Just wanted to say hi. I am brand new to SR shaving and it is incredible. Why is it so addictive? Why am I willing to make so many impulsive purchases? It seems that the culture here understands that addiction.

I picked up a shave ready dovo inox stainless steel with olive wood. I ordered it from Kent of Inglewood as I am in canada. As it's pretty humid here and I didn't want to risk rusting due to also learning so many other things other than rust prevention, I went with SS. I have ordered a filli 14 DT, and would like to get a Koraat 14 2.0 as well- hopefully I hear from Ulrik soon. What an absolutely cool niche business, I'm glad to have found it when searching for the best razor available and I'm eager to give one a try.

I have yet to have a nick free shave but today's, my 4th ever, was BBS in some spots, and I didn't need to touch up with a DE, so for me it was a DFS.

Highlights for me so far: the burn of an alcohol aftershave. The look and feel of a SR. The sound of the singing blade. The feeling of a long and successful stroke. The ritual of the strop.

I picked up a knifewear 1000/3000, an 8000, naniwa 12000 and i got a little nuts and ordered the suehiro 20000- i'll update later on how it goes, it was on amazon so hopefully it's genuine. I use an Ezra Arthur hanging bridle with nylon/leather. I definitely found that the 12k took my SR up a notch in smoothness.

Who else looks forward to their stubble growing back so they can shave again?? Any other canadian shavers on here?

Cheers!

Welcome! I also got hooked on SR shaving this year after exclusively using a DE for over 10 years.

Great place to start...

...Holy escalation! Post photos of the Fili 14 when you get it. They are beautiful. So is the Koraat 2.0 version.

If the Dovo was honed and shave ready when you got it, you should be able to maintain it with the 12k for a while. I think Brad Maggard said you could keep a professionally honed razor going indefinitely with maintenance on a 12k stone every 20 shaves.

Haha yeah, escalation is right... thank you! I will post some photos when it arrives. I appreciate the welcome and the tips.

Welcome!! The suehiro 20000 is a good stone, and will give a very keen edge. Right now I enjoy my JNAT more for this month.

Blood free shave will come. Slow down, watch your angle, pressure, and try to only remove the shaving cream.

Humidity shouldn’t be an issue, just put razor away dry. Hasn’t been an issue in south Florida. I rotate mainly between five razors and have two Clauss USMC razors that get used once a month at most.

Enjoy your trip down the rabbit hole!

Welcome, good choices with razors. Also good choice on strops, nylon is a great strop to learn on, and difficult to cut/nick a common new stropper issue.

Take your time perfecting your stropping technique, it is the most important skill you will learn and need, as stropping will be needed before and after shaving each day. The strop is your last opportunity to perfect you shaving edge prior to touching your face and will keep you shaving for a long time.

But learning to strop can be rough on a shave ready razor edge, a single errant stroke can roll an edge. The 20k and the 12k will restore all but the most damaged rolled edge in just a few laps.

You will need to lap your stone, you can do it on a sheet of 220, but diamond plate 400-600 will make stone maintenance easier.

Thank you! I picked up a truing stone which i think is 220. It has 5 raised, flat ridges or something. Is this the same as lapping?

Yes, but diamond plates are easier and cleaner to use. You can buy a 140-grit plate for $35. You will need to maintain your stone flat with each use, so make life easy.

Yes, lapping your stones flat. The first time is a bit of work, once flat maintenance lapping is just a few minutes of work.

The other problem is the slurry they create. You mark a grid on the stone face with pencil and lap it until the grid is completely removed. With a diamond plate it usually takes 2-3 rounds, re-marking a new grid each time. The stone is flat once you can completely remove a pencil grid in 10 laps or less.

With a lapping/truing stone, they create so much slurry that the slurry may be removing the pencil, and the stone is still not flat.

Give it a try and see how it goes.

Hi, How are you🤝. I'm getting excited to pick up a straight very soon, the INOX is one I'm interested in. I know this is not the same but yesterday because of my excitement and vodka, I was fooling around with a 6 inch filet knife by pressing the blade flat on my face than tilting it until I felt the edge and moved down seemed easy, comfortable and smooth and because forgetting blade length my left ear do longer protrudes, just kidding but I came close.🙀
