What's new

New idea? Lots of Possibilities? Thoughts? [PIC]

Gents,

Many of you guys may have noticed I like to experiment with colors and wood textures/detailing. For me, I enjoy tinkering in new things or styles. Some may not work as well as others, but I think I may have a really cool idea here.

I've been frustrated with the limits of what designs and colors one can do in a small shop without really high end gear - my dream tool would be a 4 axis CNC tool... Oh the designs I would churn out! LOL!

Anyways - stickers and decals never appealed to me - too synthetic/plastic I think.

But today it dawned on me the large variety of textures and patterns there are in the world of fabric! I sped off to the fabric store and grabbed a couple of test fabrics for concepts!

Please bear in mind this is nowhere near a finished product in the pic below. I did not precisely cut, place or measure the fabric (it's held on here with scotch tape), and most importantly, a finished product MUST be waterproof, so this is clearly lacking the epoxy resin coating it would have on a finished brush - BUT - what do you guys think of the idea?

Some really detailed and colorful bands and patterns may be at my fingertips! Once covered in resin the would be glass smooth and waterproof. Matte finishes would also be possible for contrast. I'm pretty stoked about the possibilities with this. Paisleys, animal prints... etc.

To get your imaginations going - here's a "Scottish" handle with some tartan! Feedback is greatly appreciated with this. Not the sexiest brush shape I've ever done - just what was handy.

Thanks

Rob

That is an interesting look. I have toyed around a bit with that idea myself. One thing that I was thinking along those lines is that you may have to coat more than the fabric to make sure that it stays dry and two it stays in place in terms of slippage and uniformity of grip (not getting a crease created accidentally between the fabric and wood).

Agreed. Stable and smooth adhesion is critical - but I think easily achieved with good resins. No question it would be permanent if coated thickly and smoothly, but I think the real trick is getting it on there without stretching it too much one way or the other.

I love a challenge! :)

Why not!

I would consider having one with the family tartan plaid to match my kilt. My Scottish mother would be very pleased.

Terrific idea, Rob. And, FWIW, I think the tartan suits that little green brush very well indeed. I'm looking forward to seeing more of your experiments with fabric.

This is a very interesting idea!!! I don't know how I feel about it for sure, but there's potential here, no doubt!! Very cool prototype.

This is a similar experiment I did with some colored rod wrapping thread and a scrap piece of basswood. You can wrap the thread in various patterns and get some cool results. I will attempt something a little more artistic when I get time, but this proves the concept. The finish is what I use to wrap threads on custom fishing rods.
