What's new

Need a little more help

So I'm currently on my 3rd strop in three weeks. It's a two piece strop, with one piece being double sided. There is a linen piece which is marked "Professional Barber Linen (three leaf clover logo) No. 2.

The other piece says "Sealskin" then "Genuine Russia". The other side has an diamond pattern to it, and seems to be treated with a red substance which has rubbed off on the linen portion.

So here is my question. How do I care for the sealskin side? It's in pretty rough shape. there's no major cracking, but there are some nice gashes in the edges that look like someone took a razor to it the wrong way. :glare: I'd like to at least make it look nice again. If needed, I will put some picts up later. Thanks in advance.

I don't know if the treatment/care applies to seal skin per se, but I'll bet the method for repairing 'flaps/gashes' would be worth trying.

Well, I tried some neatsfoot oil, and man, did this thing suck it up. I'm going to let it hang tonight and see how it looks in the morning before I put some more on. I can also take picts then.

You only need a thin coating of neatsfoot oil . No need to drench the item in question . No need for second coats . A little bit goes a long way .

This was VERY dried out. I live on a horse farm, so I have seen dried out leather, and this was similar. I did take some photos. The oil marks on the red diamond pattern side is from my wet fingers while holding it to apply some oil. The last photo shows a close up of the damage to the front:
