What's new

My newest open comb razor

So I did it again. Bought another random razor haha.

I don't know much about this one either. But the real reason I bought it because I was looking for a specific blade case. And I found one in really nice condition (compared to all the other ones I've seen up for auction) and it came with a razor that I don't really need (and made the whole purchase cost quite a bit), but oh well. I'm really happy I finally found this case! Here it is:

And here is the razor:

I'm worried about trying this one though, I feel like the gold plating might start to come off. I don't want to ruin it for when I end up selling it.

Anyone know how this one shaves? Aggressive?

Cheers!

That's a short comb NEW. Wonderful razors, very efficient, but forgiving. Yours is in great shape, I would use it. One of my favorites.

That is a nice razor. If your thinking of the razor as a investment, then don't use it as the value will most likely go up. However, if you bought it because you like it, then by all means use it and enjoy it.

Congrats. This is a great razor in great shape, keep it, you'll most probably love it.

When cleaning and not yet sure if it will fit your needs and taste simply do not yet use whitening toothpaste or any other polishing agent as this will remove the protecting lacquer layer.
Removing this lacquer surely makes the razor look nicer, but "less new". Recently Onotoman (Restored Razors) recommended here oven cleaner to get rid of that lacquer layer, which I believe might be the better solution than using polishing stuff (especially on the knurled part of the handle).

Cheers guys!

Well technically I bought the razor only because I couldn't buy the blade case without it.

It cost me quite a bit and I don't think I want to keep it since I'm not really a collector. I'm planning on selling it once I'm allowed to post to the BST, but before I did that, I figured I might as well give it a try since I have it with me. If I end up liking it, I'll pick up a similar one in worse condition for cheap, I don't really mind.

Since I've so far only cleaned non gold plated razors, I haven't had to worry too much about the plating coming off. I just threw them in really hot water with dish soap, scrubbed them hard with a toothbrush and the same soap, then a quick scrubbing bubbles spray and soak. But I feel like that might be too aggressive for this.

I'm hesitant to even just soak it in really hot water. Since I don't plan to keep it or anything, I'm wondering if it is worth the risk cleaning this to try? I also have a Tech and a Super Speed (haven't tried those yet either). If this is similar to either of those in terms of how aggressive it is, I might just pass trying it so I don't mess it up.

I was really hoping that one of these three razors I bought might be more aggressive than the DE89, but apparently so far neither the Tech or the SS are.

Don't give it a PROLONGED soak in hot water! I speak from experience; it can soften and dull the lacquer. Shave with hot water and rinse in hot water all you want; it isn't hot long enough to do any damage. My water is set at 120 degrees F. which wil not scald careless children; yours may be hotter. You wouldn"t put a hot cloth on a lacquered Martin guitar, would you?

A very nice OC. More aggressive than the EJ. Without the blade case the price will probably go down a bit. The News are great shavers.

Its a fine shaver. Cleaning it in hot water and dish sop was just fine.

Try it out. You will never know what it was about unless you do.

Ok you guys have convinced me to try it before I let it go. I figure I'll soak it in warm soapy water and that's about it. Should get it clean enough I guess. I have been wanting to try a more aggressive razor to see how that works out for me.

Also, I believe talking about value of razors is against the rules? Would someone that knows about razor prices PM me to help me out on a question I have if that's allowed?

Cheers guys!

I think that one of the best ways to get an estimate of the approximate current market value of used razors is doing an "advanced search" on evilBay where you can specify to only search for ended auctions.

Use it! I received one in a package deal purchased here and figured I would sell it when it arrived. Well that all changed when I used it. It has become one of my favorite!
