I recently starting pressing lightly (instead of medium pressure) and I'm finding it goes much better. I have to do more strokes, but overall the experience is better. It feels more comfortable this way.
As for tools, I use Gillette Custom Plus 3, which is nice. And Avalon Organics Aloe-Unscented Cream Shave, which is so much better than anything else I've tried, I wish I had discovered it sooner. I apply very little and don't rinse afterward. I just towel dry.
BTW, my post shave astringent is Thayers Original Witch Hazel with Aloe Vera. But I rarely use it now. My light pressure method seems to remove the need.
