The recent MWF discussion and poll have got me thinking about the water hardness issue and MWF so this is my semi-scientific way of determining whether that's the issue. Please don't answer if you have no idea what kind of water you have.

NB: If you have really hard water you get whitish deposits on glasses, and plumbing fixtures and pots in which you boil water. Also, you're automatic drip coffee maker probably needs frequent decalcification. If you have soft water, it tends to feel very slippery with a little soap.

I have soft water (thanks to the water softener) and I have no trouble with MWF (I face lather though) and the lather is as easy to work up as any of my other soaps.
I had much more trouble with Cade in the beginning.
The only thing is the scent. It's not too bad but it sometimes reminds me of the smell from on old guy that stands in front of you who didn't wash his scalp for a week and tries to cover it with a faint smelling lotion. :001_smile

I could bypass the water softener just to try it with really hard water and see how it relates.
So I didn't vote yet since I never tried it with hard water.

Looking at the ingredient list, MWF should not be affected by water hardness unless the water is extremely hard. It contains no less than 3 chelating agents (sodium gluconate, tetradsodium EDTA and tetrasodium etidronate) which all do a splendid job of scooping op unwanted calcium and not letting it go.

I used MWF on city water, well water with water softner, and distilled bottle water. It performed excellent for me via either face lathering or preping it in a bowl first.

Cheers,
Gary

I have pretty hard water, but I don't have any problems. I have been face-lathering exclusively for a while now, though, so I can't speak for possible bowl-lathering woes.

We have hard water and I find that I get best results if I face lather MWF. I used it this AM and got a BBS irritation free shave. Nice stuff!

I'm one of the lucky ones I guess in that I gets gobs of lather with MWF. Whether it's my technique or the soft water we have here in Buxton I don't know. (I prefer to think the former )

I considered taking the MWF over to Australia when I was there in March. I changed my mind at the last minute because we have bloody hard water in Adelaide and I didn't want to be caught short. Perhaps next time I'll take some and see how it fares (backed up by some Tabac of course).

I have a sneaking suspicion the MWF troubles are a conspiracy on behalf of B&B's face latherers, in an attempt to get people to turn away from the bowl. For shame...
