stubble trouble

I am a minimalist, and as such I have drawn two conclusions since starting my wet shaving journey. #1 I love, need, and will always wet shave. #2 I love, need, and will always use at least one musgo product. Currently I am using the cream, the aftershave, and the shower gel. Safe to say I love the scent. My question is, what is the scent? The box says vetiver and patchouli. Therefore, now I am looking for a vetiver/patchouli cologne to compliment. I have seen reviews on Sel de Vetiver, Hindu Grass, and Guerlain but hesitate to pull the trigger until i get a thumbs up from another musgo fan. Anybody?

I actually wonder the same thing. I went to westcoastshaving and the Oak Moss Musgo (cologne #1) is actually out of stock. That's a good sign i would think. Any other old school scents out there? Knize Ten, Guerlain vetiver, etc.?

I've yet to find something that matches Musgo's divine scent...but here are some great, great compliments to it:

Guerlaine Vetiver
Grigio Perla
Royall Vetiver
Polo Modern Reserve
Musgo Oakmoss Cologne (can't vouch for it cause I haven't tried it, but have read its a good compliment).

The other one I imagine might be good is Paco Rabonne...will try that soon.

Any other recommendations are welcome!

iI would like to assume that the oak moss musgo cologne would be a great match. Its only 20 bucks anyway (if i can find it). Thanks for the advice!

I'm familiar with some but not all of the Musgo products. The cream has that sweet hay/fern smell, which to me is one of the best scents in shaving. I haven't found any exact matches, but one very complementary scent would be Booster Mosswood after shave. It's not a full-strength EDT, but for an after shave it's got pretty good legs. Penhaligon's English Fern is a high-priced option, but is an excellent classic that will always be in my rotation. If you want to emphasize the sweet and spicy aspects of the Musgo cream, but not so much the green aspects, you might also check out Trumper's Sandalwood, which is a golden, toasty scent very nice for cool weather.

The Musgo Real No. 2 Oak Moss cologne is not a close match to the cream. The No. 2 has a very distinctive clean, green scent that is heady and balsamic, like fresh green leaves and snapped green twigs. In that respect, it shares more with Taylor's Avocado cream than the Musgo cream. The No. 2 is so heady that it might strike some as "floral," though when you stop and think about it, it's definitely green.

Bottom line, if you want to complement the scent of the Musgo cream, the Booster Mosswood is, bang for buck, a very compelling choice.

Doug

Caswell Massey has a line of patchouli products including AS and cologne. They may have other products as well. It is a nice patchouli, not like the crude products of the 60's so favored by hippies and used to cover a lack of hot water and soap!

Thanks for making that distinction ( regarding the hippie - patchouli connection ). I was born in '74 and even I know it was a staple in the hippie reprtoire (along with mood rings and roach clips). Musgo doesn't conjur these images, at least in my square mind. I will be looking into some of the suggestions you guys have made. thanks!

I agree. I ahve tried a good number of different products, but Musgo is always at the top of my list. I will always keep the after shave and balsam on hand. I like the pre shave oil, but I am on the fence with the Oak Moss cologne. I think that the after shave last pretty darn long and often times I just use it as a cologne.

If it's masculine patchouli you want, you might also consider Pashana after shave (the amber colored stuff). It's very strong for an A/S -- really more like a cologne.

As long as we're on the topic; what deodorant has a complimentary / similar scent to Musgo real?

Ken

I use a crystal deodorant (alum), which has no scent, so it doesn't clash with any aftershave/cologne. I find it's too complicated to try to match scents.

I love the smell of the aftershave - my favorite scent hands down. The problem is it's a little sticky to use as a cologne. I just put it on my face, and as such, it doesn't really have the sillage I'm looking for. That is, it stays close to the skin. Insert over-doing it comment here. Got the oak moss a couple of days ago. Very different scent, questionable even if you just smell it out of the bottle. Once it settles on the skin, I actually like it. Doesn't smell like Musgo, but similar in its uniqueness and masculinity. Orange Amber and Spiced Citrus are en route. Agreed, these scents are not for everyone. Insert desperate middle-aged comment here. For me though, Claus Porto offers a quality line of old-world products, and I've yet to sample one I will not keep buying.
