Musgo Real Shaving Soap - Any opinions yet?

I recall one member saying that it was terrible, that it didn't make anything but a thin bubbly mess. Maybe he just got a bad puck but he wasn't too happy about the soap. I think the word he used to describe it was "fraud".

Everyone that has used it says the same thing; its an abomination. You cannot make a stable lather with it to save your life. The cream is very good. The soap is a joke.

This is disappointing to hear....

Thank you for keeping me from a bad investment.

Maybe their soap is being made by Casswell Massey.

FYI, word around shavedom is Caswell-Massey is rolling out its new reformulated line in October.

As for Musgo Real soap, I'd say the jury is still out. While there are some negative reviews posted here, a few members from another shaving forum have expressed positive reviews.

Rumors are Claus Porto mistakenly packaged bath soap as shave soap, though this is only speculation.

There are people that are able to get a good lather from it. I sold my puck to someone and they sent me pics of the lather that they made and it looked really great. I think you just need to play around with it a bit. I gave up after one shave, but after seeing the lather this guy made maybe I should have tried again.

I tried to lather it a about 3 times with no luck. Had no issue at all with MWF, which some have a hard time lathering. Not worth the effort IMHO.

I have soft water and his was the best I could do with my sample of the new Musgo shave soap. It make look like nice lather it
didn't offer much cushion or slickness during my shave. The lather began to collapse and dissolve as I was shooting the pictures.

And here is a phone snap of the ingredients.

I, too, read all the negative reviews, but bought a puck to try. I had no problem creating a decent lather with a pleasant scent. It is no worse than many other soaps, but not as good as those that have earned a strong repuation. Would I recommend it? No! I would not recommend several well known soap brands, either. I think most of us had very high expectations( I did!) for a MR soap and the product fell short. But it is not bad stuff and I am happy to keep in my rotation.

What soaps do these guys make?

They make Caswell-Massey soaps, creams, fragrances and other personal care products.

All their gear is beautifully, and strongly, scented, but the soaps (and to a slightly lesser extent, the creams) are the worst shaving products I've ever used. My Almond CM soap became a body soap in the shower after four or so attempts at shaving with it. The lather breaks down on your face before you can pick up your razor.

I had very high expectations from this soap! I had no problem at all creating a decent lather with a very pleasant scent, although is a bit tricky with the water. I used it almost for a whole week in order to learn how it works. Every time I was recalculating the amount of the water in by brush, in order to create a thicker and more stable lather. I also stop using my pre-shave cream thinking that it might be affecting it. At the end, always the lather began to collapse and dissolve as I was shaving, no matter what! What it left was a film which did offer much slickness to allow the razor to glide, so you can finish shaving comfortably enough. Another property of this “soap” is that it doesn't dry your face. It seams that it works more as a shaving lubricant than as a shaving soap. It's really surprising considering the heritage and reputation of Claus Porto. As an epilogue I think Claus Porto must to reformulate its ingredients. Therefore I cannot recommend it as a traditional shaving soap but only as a “shaving lubricant”.

Takisg, I agree completely with your opinion regarding this product. Maybe they should take a step back and rework their soap recipe. I'd happily buy and try it again because of the reputation of the manufacturer.

I just sent them an e-mail...i wonder if they take the time just to answer it. As soon i have their reaction i will post it!

What soaps do these guys make?

I know this post is old but Caswell Massey is a large boutique soap maker that mainly makes bath soaps under their own name in many different scents. Their prices are out of sight so I haven't tried any of their soaps. This brand is mainly (or maybe only) sold in their own catalog and website. I haven't seen a Caswell Massey soap in any shop.
