Muhle R89 Vs HD

I have a HD and it's my everyday razor, if I were tempted by the R89 is it really much different? If it does perform differently, in what way - wider blade gap/more aggressive, weight, length balance etc?

Thanks

I have not shaved with a Merkur razor in close to six months (having briefly owned a 38R early in my wet shaving adventures), that being said, I think you will find the Muhle to be a milder shave (less aggressive), to be better balanced, and to have a superior finish. It will also weigh less than your Merkur HD.

My Muhle 38R showed up last week, and it has quickly rose to the top of my collection. :thumbup1:

It's been giving me close, comfortable, very smooth shaves so far.

Interesting. I had been using a new Muhle R89 for several months before winning a gold Merkur HD in the Carnival; I've been using the Merkur for the last several weeks (trying to find a better blade match for it starting this last week).

I find that the R89 is a tad more aggressive, but smooth (unlike my Red Tip Super Speed), mostly due to the length of the handle/balance/weight (as you mentioned), and the difference in blade angle. I don't believe that the gap is much different, if at all, between the two.

Both are fine razors. I'm planning on going back to the R89 once I find the best blade (for me) for the HD. I'll probably do a blade search for the R89 as well.

For me the HD seams a tad more aggressive but I think aggressiveness is not what sets these razors apart.

The HD has a shorter and much heavier handle while the heads are more or less the same in weight; I prefer the R89 because this makes (for me) the shave much easier to control and gives you more 'feel' in the razor. I have to admit that I do not like the handles on the 2-piece razors like the 11C-34C/G-37C/G very much because I find them too short for a good grip. But that is just me.

Another plus of the Mühle is its fit and finish; blade ligns up perfectly (non of my Merkurs do) and the plating on the Mühle reduces the Merkur to a factory's 2nd choice. That makes them more a quality item but that doesn't make them a better shaver for you.

My experience mirrors talibeard's exactly.

I shaved exclusively with an HD for about a year. I bought a Muhle R89 a little over three months ago and haven't looked back. I actually sold of my HD recently. The M R89 is a fine razor indeed.

The Muhle R89 and the Edwin Jagger DE89L are superb razors. I own both and the finish compared to the Merkur is profound. Tailbear is correct, they make the Merkur look like a second. Also the Muhle and Jagger heads are not made by Merkur. Some more info can be found here:

also there is a 10%off coupon for The English Shaving Company and they also have the DE89L in stock:
