Moving to Texas....any advice?....

Hey Guys,

So...it looks like I'm going to be moving to Texas. I will be about an hour south of the Odessa/Midland area in a little town called Rankin.

So my question is...any advise? For the record, I love to fish, but this is the middle of the friggin desert! What I want to know is....what kind of odd things do I need to prepare myself for. I love BBQ and southern food. So I'm really looking forward to that. I've lived in the Portland Oregon area since about 1980, so I am really used to the people, climate, and other things here.

Anyhow...any advise would be greatly appreciated. One thing I have noticed, is that there seems to be a TON of members from Texas...so I'm guessing I can get a little good advise.

I can't say that there's much to offer in the way of fishing, but that region of the country has some really open places to stretch out and watch the sky. My wife and I love the "big empty" like that where the view never seems to end - it has a special beauty of all it's own.

If you have dry skin, better bring moisturizer. Sunglasses and wide brim hat as well.

Man, you are going to out in the middle of no where!

You've got Big Bend National Park about 200 miles south of you... but yeah, in general you're a long way from anything out there.

Hmmm... I'd love to help you, but my side of Texas is very different than that side, so I have no advice.

Well, you could advise him to head our way

He could stop in Central Texas. Happy medium between dessert and swamp. (Just kidding!)

To kopio: Unfortunately I don't know anything about that area. Google Earth shows Pecos (and not much else besides an oil field) to be about an hour south of Midland. Is that close to where you are going?

Swamps are in the south east area. But, there are better reasons to stay over in central or north Texas...

I remember when I lived in the Penhandle we used to go rattlesnake hunting, followed by BBQ it was fun. :001_smile

As the saying goes, "get here as fast as you can"! I think you'll find the people are fantastic. Happy travels!

Hmm. Didn't notice that "Rankin" first time I read your post. Google Earth only knows about one Rankin, near Dallas -- a long way from Midland.

Google's all mixed up about Texas. They also put Liberty Hill between Houston and Lufkin. Rankin's 55 miles due south of Midland.

It's *very* small. Used to have a restaurant, but it looks like it's closed now. :frown:

There is a Liberty Hill over in the area you're talking about, & one north of Austin. The one close to Lufkn is not far from me

Boy, I'll say! First time I looked south of Midland Google Earth showed Pecos county. Next time I looked it showed Upton county and there doesn't even seem to *be* a Pecos county!

For me it puts Liberty Hill in the right place.

UPDATE! Seems Google Earth must have been updating its maps in the background! In addition to changing Pecos County to Upton County, it now has Rankin in th right place!
