More Careless People

Anyone else notice a lot more people posting links to live auctions, or is it just me? I mean, the forum rules are pretty clear on this, or are folks just not taking the time to review them?

It's the latter. I'm guilty of not keeping up with B/S/T rules so I have not stones to throw. We also got an influx of new members arounf the time of the fundraiser. A lot of those new members probably don't realize we have rules.

Forum Rule 2. Realize that we take great pride in B&B being a work-friendly, internet oasis for gentlemanly behavior. This means that profanity, inflammatory comments regarding politics and/or religion, personal attacks, pornographic images, discussions of illegal or illicit activity, or any other ungentlemanly behavior as deemed inappropriate by the Administrators/Moderators, is unacceptable and will not be tolerated. Offenders will be dealt with swiftly. More to the point, if it's likely to be offensive, or if you wouldn't say it to someone in person, it doesn't belong here.

just people who cant be arsed reading.

initially people dont see the "harm" but once you are here for awhile, you get used to the rules, and adopt to them

I for one am guilty of posting a live bay link as a joke poking fun at the expense of some bidders. I dish it out, so I can take it as well.

Or in the case of the OP's issue...

The first time you end up paying $50 for that nice looking gold Tech because someone posted it here and 40 newbies jumped into the bidding, you get the point.

Yep, just like everything in life. One of the main reasons for not posting live auctions is 1) We don't know if you're the seller attempting to draw more attention to an item you're selling.

Didn't even think of that.
I always thought of it as a consideration issue toward members who might be bidding on it.

Links to live BINs are legal, and a seller could still shill his auctions here (until admin makes the userID connection and forces him to go to vendor status).

Well, if you're bidding on it, you should know the value of it. Kind of your own fault in a sense if you way overpay for an item. I mean, it's considerate for other members in an attempt to "protect" them from overpaying, yes. But, much more the case of a not so honest seller in here jacking up their sales.

Maybe not to keep them from overpaying... but the posting could pull in someone who is willing to overpay so you miss out on it at a fair price.

And I agree... the comment is a little over the top.

If we find someone not following the rules just politely tell them what the rules are, wish them a good day and be done with it.

And to that I say good day Gentleman and happy hunting!

The Internet started out as the bailiwick of some people with very rudimentary social skills, who were often very rude to newcomers. B&B is a kindly introduction to the world of forum messaging, with a gentle, laid-back type atmosphere that is very refreshing, and is worth preserving.

The particular rule involved is obviously designed to reduce potential friction between B&B members who happen to want the same items and accidentally bid against one another. It may be very obvious to me, but I've been tinkering with computers half my life, well, almost. I started in 1977, I think. I can't be sure when I was first involved with the local Community College system's part-time evening school as an instructor, and gained access through their gateway onto the 'Net of the past (all text, no graphics then).

I'm sure many of our newer members scanned the Terms of Service Agreement casually and have little reason to automatically understand that live links to active auctions aren't a good idea in a place like this.

At bottome of page, "Terms of Service." :)

Thanks, I had forgotten all about them, enjoy the BB forums and have learnt so much from them so I just went & read them! I have seen so many discussion forums "ruined" over the years and impressed with what I have seen here since I first "tuned in" last November & joined in January.
