mixing uberlather w/ the "cube"

Hello all!

I've been making uberlather for about the past month now and it has been great! I've been using my AOS sandlewood soap, 100% glycerin and TOBS Avocado cream. Anywho, I also have been using the hydrolast aftershave balm (along with alum bloc and thayers). I was very impressed with the hydrolast aftershave so I thought I'd try making uberlather with the cube. I've tried it twice and both times sucked. I figure I'm doing something wrong and thought I'd probe to see if any other forum members have tried the cube. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

I think the cube is excellent as a prep, right before applying a cream or soap.

You might try washing your face with the cube, rubbing the lather into your pores with warm soapy water. I leave the soap on my face and then lather up and apply the AOS soap over it, but you could rinse or wash the cube lather off.

I think that working the extremely slick cube lather into the pores is one step that improves my shave no matter what products I use afterwards.

do you use the cloth or the badger brush when you wash with the cube?
also, I've been using the uberlather recently with great success. Here is a good video that many may have seen already.

I heard good things about the hydrolast cube and loved the aftershave balm so thought I'd give it a go. Would you say it would be better to prime my brush with the cube or with the soap before lathering up?

I'm more old school - I wash with it just bar in hands, like a regular face/body soap. This was an older iteration of CAR's recomendations that would be done prior to brush lathering with a "slag" of cube lather, Activator and shaving paste.

I watched a CAR video recently on Mike Sandoval's site, and it looks like the main advantage of his cloth is as a vehicle for mixing the cube lather with his Activator. I also noted that in his new cloth method he just hand rubs the shaving paste after finishing with the cloth. It makes me think that one could probably face lather all his products with neither cloth nor brush, but I see no reason I would go that route when I'm happy with my hand wash with cube/brush lather with AOS soap routine.

If you want to use the cube with non-Hydrolast products, I'd still recommend using it as a first step wash as in my previous post. This as a foundation makes every product I've used perform better.

sounds good and thanks for the input.

I'm using a straight and don't think I'll be converting to a DE ever but I here some good things about the hydrolast products (however I like many other products out there also so I probably won't be settling down to a monogamous hydrolast relationship). I saw the cloth video and also the video saying you need the echante brush. I have a bulb shaped brush which they seem to discourage. Maybe using the cube as a cleanser like you mentioned and building the uberlather like I have been would be the recommended method.

I guess I'll just have to experiment a little.
