Mitchell's Wool Fat Storing between Shaves

I just purchased a puck of Mitchell's Wool Fat soap with the Mitchell's porcelain container.

I have read that this soap needs to be stored in airtight container between shaves. Is this so? I take it that the porcelain container won't keep it fresh?

Please advise.

Thanks

If you're using it everyday, it probably doesn't matter, but you could always leave the lid off after you shave and then cover when you get home from work. If you're a night shaver, pop the lid back on it when you get up.

If you're not using it very often, expect the puck to crack (as it likes attention and being used daily) if you let it dry and pack it away.
NOTE: The cracks don't affect performance and upon re-entry into rotation, it will absorb enough liquids on it's own to, once again, be all it's cracked up to be.

Thanks for the response.

I use it every day. I just did a spot check on puck since using it this morning (about 11 hour ago) and it is actually soft, that is not hard or dried out.

I have never heard that, people are paranoid

I keep my MWF in the ceramic container, that is hardly air tight, with no problems

Even if it dries out, just add water and bobs your uncle

Ok then, can it get too wet? Say you put the lid back on with quite a lot of moisture in there (winter time) would it go mushy and break down.

I wouldn't leave the soap soaking in water, just pour out the excess water when your done shaving and it will dry on its own. Its soap...you're not going to hurt it. It will absorb water and swell and then when it dries, it will crack but don't be alarmed.

I keep it uncovered until it's dry then cover, I don't have the porcelain container but that shouldn't make a difference. I have other soaps that are uncovered and it hasn't been a problem. If your like me and you have a large rotation and you leave a soap uncovered it may literally collect dust.

I just rinse it off when I'm done and cover it in the ceramic container. MWF has a reputation for being finicky, but its really not (certainly not for storage or in-between purposes). I have found that if it dries out (which really only happens if you don't use it for at least a couple of days) it cracks. But once you start using it again, its fine.

The only negative effects of keeping soap uncovered is that the scent will eventually dissipate and the soap itself will shrink a tiny bit as more of its water content evaporates. Soap should actually be kept in the open or at least with a lid that only sits on top so that the soap can dry between uses. This will make the soap last much longer.

I store my MWF in a simple aluminum container. It started to crack and forced itself back into my daily rotation. I'm not complaining :)

I'd be surprised if the ceramic container didn't provide sufficient storage, since most people seem to use it for the soaps they buy
