What's new

Merkurs first impressions

New to DE shaving, with a slight RAD, I acquired a Futur, a Vision 2000 and today had my first shave with the 39c sledgehammer that arrived this morning.

I've only used the Merkur Platinum blades that came with the razors, although I have Feathers waiting to be tested.

The Futur shaves are
- very, very nice. It feels nice. It looks nice. I love the sound. I love the close shaves. I have no under-the-nose problems whatsoever; in fact, it gives me the best shaves. I love this one. In fact, my RAD says: "Get a gold one!" :001_wub:

The Vision 2000 shaves are
- nice. It looks so nice. It has the heavy feel I like. It's so much fun to change the blade, I tend to open and close the thing just because I can. It works nicely under the nose. It does tend to scratch my face, compared to the Futur, but still OK. Greater blade gap means scratchier shave, but not closer. Technique, possibly. Could be a blade thing. My RAD says: "You are OK with this one." :001_unsur

The 39c shave was
- used lightly, with caution and attention (warned by others for the slant effect)
- lacking audio feedback (not as nice as the Futur and Vison in that respect)
- close in two passes (but I missed some spots, probably being overly cautious)
- easy (not nearly as frightening and no nicks or cuts)
My RAD says: "Good on you for getting this as comparison to the Futur!"

So, I am pleased with all of them and looking forward to the next shave.

I have ordered a test pack of blades to see if the Vision might pick up in usability.

)

P.S. My wife has no idea I just ordered the Feather All Stainless Safety Razor TAS-DS with the test pack of blades, so don't tell her, OK? Shhh...

It's great when you find something that works and satisfied with. Many great shaves ahead!

You're missing a Mergress :)

Thanks for the tip, but I've looked at others' reviews and I'm leaning towards the Pils crazy expensive set next.

I might go for a Mergress - i guess it means the Merkur Progress - for later, but I'm no fan of the short handle, I'm partial for long, heavy razors at this point of my RAD.

I haven't started to look at vintage, yet. So far, I'm good with zing-zang new ones.

Then we have the entire straight razor thingy... :tongue_sm

Happy hunting to all of you!

)

I ordered a Futur and cut myself changing the blade out and immediately wanted to trade it. Thanks to NILS I didn't and boy am I glad. Thanks again NILS.

The futur was my first de and I still think it is an awesome tool. I bought it as part of a set and still use the silvertip brush daily. Unfortunately starting work at 6 means I needed a more forgiving razor, so the HD is now my daily driver.

But the futur is my porsche in the garage!

Wouldn't it be lovely to have the entire collection of Merkurs? NO, says reason. You know you want to, says my RAD.

I guess I don't have to have them all this year. I need something to occupy my free time and finances next year, as well.

Well, I'm on the waiting list on leesrazors.com for a Mergress XL, just to have it. I know I don't really need it, but I can't seem to resist having one.

I'm proud that I did not buy an Ikon long handle today. We'll see how long it will take before I'm sniffing around that site again. The three piece design is not quite my cup of tea, though. It seems so fiddly to switch blades. Those of you who like that type, why is that? Advantages?

Anyway, it's long due to try a bigger badger brush and, certainly, a good quality boar. Must remember to check the reviews first...
