What's new

Men had about 30% testosterone 25 years ago

Some people say it's because of the chemical BPA, which is estroogenic, and others say it's because the standards of living have been raised, so people are happier which leads to a decline of testosterone.

What do you think?

EDIT: I mean, more testosterone!

I think Chuck Norris has absorbed all the testosterone.

I hope you mean 30% more testosterone rather than an absolute value of 30%.

My money is on something we eat or drink. We store, even cook in plastic. Most of our food is processed to make it store longer regardless of the (unknown) effects on health. The water we drink has passed through countless other people before being cleaned and pumped to our taps to start the cycle over again.

The air pollution in towns is probably nothing compared to the deliberate corruption of what we ingest.

Less testosterone must make us more easily controlled by government. Conspiracy theory, anyone?

I wonder if this means that our ancestors had heavier, tougher beards? That would explain why Gillette Old Types are so aggressive.

I put it down to breeding, men have gone from hunter gatherers where physical prowess was important.

The more we dwell in cities, other qualities are needed to become good 'providers', so naturally women are attracted to men who excel in the modern workplace and what the media likes to call the 'new man'.

I read the other day that women who are on the pill are attracted to more feminine men.

People don't exercise as often these days, which is a factor. Hormones in the water supply and endocrine disruptors in food and packaging are said to be factors, but no research has been done on humans.

I call shenanigans on this idea. Human beings – especially, I would guess, the ancestors of most of B&B's membership – went from hunter-gatherer societies to sedentarized and urbanized societies over 5,000 years ago. That ship done sailed long ago. There is not a whit of physical evolutionary difference between a man alive today and his male ancestors 200 years ago.

This idea also presumes that women cannot/do not provide for themselves, and have to look around for a man to do it for them. That is a distinctly modern idea that our hominid ancestors millions of years ago would have thought insane. I mean, if they had a concept of insanity and all.

If the assertion that men currently contain less testosterone today than in previous generations, environmental factors like diet and living conditions, not any evolutionary track of development, would be my guess as to the cause.

Please...stop making me think about work. I'm here to think about razors, not my job!

Yes, YES! This recent "return to manhood" we've seen in fashion and in other places is a ploy to get men prepared for war! WW3 - here we come!

I think this problem can be reversed by going to the gym and working out. Working out produces testosterone :001_cool:

Want to increase your testosterone? Grab your Red Tip Super Speed, cover your face with some Old Spice canned foam, look in the mirror and - in your outside voice - proclaim "I am a man!". 2% increase right there. Slap on some MANDOM after shave. 5% increase. And one of the following:

1) Your married: Go find your SO, she'll tell you to please take out the garbage, which you do, 10% increase! You are the man!

2) Your single: grab a beer and watch a game on the television. testosterone? who needs testosterone in the land of easy breezy?

:biggrin1:

Testosterone levels vary in primate males in response to social and psychological factors such as competition, dominance, etc. Social conditions and psychological inputs have changed considerably over the last few decades for the vast majority of men, it's hardly surprising that there have been related changes in testosterone levels. Since it would be impossible to isolate any one of the hundreds (or millions?) of variables which might have an influence discussion of "the" cause is likely purely speculative.

I'm not so sure I accept the data to begin with. Perhaps the blood test has improved and the results are more accurate today?

Perhaps somebody is trying to sell something: like testosterone patches? There are fads in medicine too.

I don't think testosterone has gone down because the standard of living has improved in America over the past 10 years. The stock market was slightly DOWN over the last 10 years, and the middle class lost about 10% of its wealth to the top 10% of Americans.

Don't know enough to comment about BPA either way. I guess you could put me in the camp of mild skeptic over this.

I don't think that a natural evolutionary process (for example claiming that quality of life has gone up so testosterone levels have gone down) could produce such drastic results in just 30 years.

If the figures are real then I think it has more to do with what we put in our bodies and what we expose our bodies to.

A college professor of mine claimed that female hormones are not removed from our drinking water. Not sure what the effect of this would be thought.

Standard of living has been raised.

Hah.

Haha.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

You drones are hilarious. By the way, the chocolate rations have been overproduced, 20 grams per person instead of the projected 40-- uh... 10.

And the congealed vegetable oil and milk solids-- err, I mean... the cheese... is better too.

And we've learned to put fake sugar-- err, sweeter high fructose sugar into everything.

And there's so much more shiny garbage-- I mean stuff to buy! -- like electric razors and adult TV shows that appeal to a 2 year old's attention span and cell phones and iPods that you absolutely must upgrade every other week with all the features you'll never use-- I mean, the AMAZING features that will change your life....

And the cars are better... more powerful with their smaller engines, while the gas mileage has improved from 25-30mpg city to 22-25mpg city, with lower emissions! And drivers are better, because instead of teaching them to drive we put anti-lock brakes and traction control and pre-crash systems into cars... who needs road tests and proper driver's ed anymore when you can make 3 right hand turns in a parking lot and get a license to drive a car that drives itself?

The schools are better too. Students are much happier passing even though they're retarded and can't read; failing a student twice is unheard of, so we just pass them after the first time. Everyone gets a diploma! We even lowered the passing grade on standardized tests, and made them easier! Now our working force can get straight to the working world of Burger King!

And look at the news! We've improved it! Who needs current events and stable, thought-provoking commentary from hard-working journalists? We get bull**** celebrity gossip from the AP and absolutely idiotic political commentary from no-knowledge morons who convince us they know everything, and we believe it!

It goes on and on....

+1 nuff said.

Look at the men on TV 40 years ago, Gunsmoke, Davy Crockett, Daniel Boone, The Marlboro man, the Cartwrights on Bonanza, Nick Adams was the Rebel, there was Branded and Palladin. At the movies male rolls were protrayed by John Wayne, Bogey, Steve McQueen, Clark Gable, Jimmy Stewart

Today we protray our men as fools, bumbling idiots, dependent on the SO to bring order to their lives and they are so damn sensitive and effeminate......... its no wonder that young men don't know how to behave

glad I was born in the 1940s

Assuming this was even a viable test. There can be a number of explanations, such as:

The lack of sleep the average male gets now than then. There were probably a lot more true 9-5ers then than now. A lot of men who actually have a job right now, likely work longer hours. Chances are they also get less sleep which can affect basically everything in the body. Stress levels I would bet are higher as well which I'd bet also plays a factor. Look at what many of us are looking to do just with shaving.... Slow down a bit, relax, take some time out of a busy schedule to enjoy ourselves. Society has gotten to the point where the common "rat race" has become a full blown competition. Look at what kids in school are learning and expected to know now versus 25 years ago. There is constant pressure to strive to the top, do more in less time, and less resources. All those factors take a toll on people compared to a time when a person didn't have to push themselves to the limit almost all the time to make ends meet. Stress itself can be a test killer which, if this is an accurate study would be my guess for the decline.

There was a point in time where a blue collar man could basically provide for his family, with his wife staying home to raise the kids and dad could still find some time to play with his kid. Now the norm is both parents having to work, kids are in daycare all day, and family time is maybe an hour or so a night if you're lucky. Assuming mom or dad isn't working late. It's just a different era all together.
