Mantic vs SMFZach

Now, I'll do what I tell others not to do, and call mantic's face lathering at 6 mins in that video for "wrong". Look at that! I don't call that lathering. It doesn't look very protective, nor does it look very thick and cushioning. In the first video, however, it looks very good.

I realise that mantic is using a badger brush, but that's just another reason to properly load the brush! I mean, that brush isn't loaded!

Mantic is using a soap, right?:tongue_sm

At 6 mins he's only just started that mix. 2 minutes later it looks fine, but I'd have used more product to begin with and then taken less time.

As a boar user also, I find Zachs method is wasteful, inconsistent and redundant. I fail to see the point of saturating the soap to make 'pre lather' which is a made up words for suds, only to keep going til you've wasted heaps of soap and made a mess.

The same end can be achieve by not drowning the soap, loading the brush and making lather on your face or in a bowl.

Each to their own, you can get a useable lather from either, but Zach's vid gets a lot of airplay and makes people think boars are finicky and harder to use.

+1

I'll admit that Mantic's method left me w/ not enough soap when I first started out but Zach's method is overkill.
The key is to adjust for the brush, soap and water you have. (And start out w/ less water)

I think Mantic's looks fine. You dont need to look like Santa Claus.

The other guy just wastes a ton of soap and takes forever. Mantic's loading isn't exactly correct, it takes more than 3 swirls. His lather on the other hand is fine. He's using VDH, which isnt that great of a soap to begin with and doesnt make a great lather imho.

I disagree. It may not be the world's best soap, but I get a perfectly fine lather out of VDH Deluxe.

I do agree that's Zach's Method is extremely wasteful of soap, and for the most part unnecessary. He washes a lot of quality soap down the drain.

The normal method of making lather from a soap, vs. Zach's Method are really just two different approaches to the same goal:

The usual method starts out with a fairly dry brush, loads it with a fairly large amount of soap (sorry but the 3 swirls, and go method doesn't work well for me. I load for upwards of a minute), and then adds water until the optimal lather is achieved. This method starts out with lots of soap, and little water.

"Zach's Method" starts out with a lot of water, and introduces soap into the mixture until the amount of soap equalizes with the overdose of water. In the process, he let's a lot of perfectly good soap go down the drain.

Boar brushes work perfectly fine, without using "Zach's Method".

By the way "quick lather with boar" is a bit of a misnomer, as the video is 7.5 minutes long!! It takes me 2-3 minutes max to generate a great lather the normal way.

I tried both methods when I started face lathering and I prefer Mantic's method. I find it easier to add water to the mix rather than soap, not to mention that I make much less of a mess doing it that way (I'm not terribly coordinated first thing in the morning).

Don't be hatin' on the Mantic, yo. :mad3:

As marketing tools go, Zach makes lathering look neither easy nor fun. Mantic's approach gets points for editorial effectiveness.

Michiganlover, I agree with you about VDH Deluxe. Interestingly enough, I would say the same thing about modern Williams. The difference to me is that it's easier to get fine lather out of VDH, and there is a bit of a learning curve with Williams. Uncharacteristically of most posts on this topic, I'm going to add a "YMMV". :001_smile

+1 I think Mantic and Zach are on opposite ends of the spectrum. I find the best method for me, my products, and my hard water is somewhere in the middle of the spectrum skewing a little towards Mantic's end.

I've always looked on Zach's video as "the most surefire way to create lather" - ie, a great starting point for newbies that guarantees instant results. Emphasis on 'starting point' - as your technique improves, you should be tightening up the routine and using less product.

omg... the SMF guy is so irritating.

Somehow I learned how to make lather without a video... without the internet........without using the exact amount of water to wet my brush..... as did about 1,000,000,000,000 other men before me.

People try to make this so difficult... AND IT'S NOT!!!!

Shaving is not brain surgery. It's not even rocket science.

What are you talking about? :confused1
At 6:00 his brush is still in the mug!

Yeah, I had to stop watching the first video midway through.

Mantic rules! Also he seems to utilize many different styles of lathering in his various video tutorials.
