What's new

Manhattan cocktail lovers

I just made a Manhattan for the first time ever....(ignore that is is only 10am I work 3rd shift so I find it socially acceptable to drink in the mornings:001_rolle.)

Bourbon used: Ezra Brooks single barrel 12yr.

Verdict: Delicious but two Manhattans are a little much. Feeling it now. Anyone else a fan of this cocktail?

There are many fans of, and threads about, this fine drink on B&B. Welcome to the club.

This is my Dad's favorite drink. He's coming out for a month at the end of January so I have to start practicing to get them just right. Guess I'll just have to drink those practice runs. :biggrin1:

This is a favorite of mine. It's been said the Manhattan is made with either Bourbon or Whiskey. I typically use Dewars White Label in my Manhattans.

3 oz Dewars White Label
.75 oz Sweet Vermouth
Dash of Angostura Bitters
Maraschino Cherry

Pretty typical recipe.

If you think that 2 did you in, one time I overindulged and drank 8 in less than 2 hours.

Bad night. Really bad night.

Wouldn't the Dewars technically make it a Rob Roy?

I think so as well.

However, I've read several pieces of history on the Manhattan and half said it was Bourbon and the other than it was blended Scotch.

So I don't actually know.

I do know that it's good. :w00t:

2.5 oz Rittenhouse Rye
1 oz Carpano Antiqua Vermouth
Aromatic bitters (Angostura, barrel-aged Fee, sometimes Angostura Orange)
stir with ice very well
strain into chilled cocktail glass with 3 Luxardo marasche cherries.

Beautiful drink.

I usually get one of these if I'm at reception or whatnot where the bartender actually knows how to make it. I'm really surprised how often I order one only to hear, "uhh, what's in that?". But I usually enjoy it.

I enjoy even more when someone asks "What is that?" and when I offer to them to try it they take a sip and their face goes all funny. Usually the words "jet fuel" follow.

I need to give this drink a go. Which brand/s of cherries do you guys think best. Most of the ones I see look a bit "unnatural", if you know what I mean.

+1 on Manhattan's with Rye!

Beautiful drink.

+infinity on the Antica vermouth

Russell's Reserve Rye for me

I actually prefer Peychaud's bitters lately.

Yes!, that's the stuff. It must be the Rittenhouse Bottled in Bond, though. Wild Turkey Rye 101 is also great.

I prefer Angostura bitters.

As cliche this sounds because of James Bond, I prefer mine shaken and not stirred (even though he referred to a "Vesper").

Also, I fill my cocktail glass with ice cubes and pour in some water and let it sit and get the glass nice and cold.
