malgamite (sp??) - fish bait

My dad used to go fishing with this old coot who used bait he referred to as "malgamites" (sure thats not how its spelled) that as near as I can recall looked almost but not quite like crickets (don't seem to remember them having as long jumping legs).

Used them creek fishing in Rocky's

Anyone shed some light on what these might have been, their proper name, etc.?

As kind of a disgusting aside they were sold dead and he'd keep a few in his mouth to soften them up for when he needed a new one

CRAP ON A CRACKER, yes that kind of looks frighteningly familiar but don't recall them being that big. I need to go look at some razors, fountain pens, guns or motorbikes to get that out of my head.
