Making a travel razor case

A project I am considering is making my own travel razor case. I currently have an EJ leather one, but I really don't care for it, and have thought about what I want my ideal travel case to be like. I like the old vintage travel cases where the razor is fully assembled and lying on purple velvet, with a blade bank/box next to it.

My current thoughts -

Find or buy a fancy tin that is just big enough for a fully assembled DE razor (roughly 4.5" x 3" x 1.5")
Spray adhesive a layer of high density foam on to the bottom
Spray adhesive several blocks of high density foam on top of the pre-existing foam to make razor and blade box shaped depressions
(alternately, start with a rectangular piece of foam and simply cut out depressions)
Spray adhesive purple velvet to the foam to make it look nice
Glue foam and purple velvet to the inside of the lid

My concern is that I don't know how secure tins are in travelling compared to some plastic containers I have where the lids snap on very securely. The downside of plastic is that it doesn't look very classy, and I'd have to pain the inside as the plastic is translucent.

Am I missing any great ideas?

There have been some great threads on Altoids tins transformed by using 3D printers. That my be exactly what your looking for!

I'm toying with this for my President. It 'aint pretty, but it's perfectly functional. It also closes securely.

I've also made cases by finding cool metal boxes at antique stores, and converting a pen case to hold a Tech.

I'd love the Altoids tin but I'd like to keep it assembled during shipping.

Another option would be a hard compact camera case with an intenal strap, but it still might move around a lot. Or a travel humidor that someone linked - much more space than I need, but looks ideal otherwise.

OK, I've spent way too much time browsing the web and thinking about this - think I will either end up wrapping my razor in a soft cloth and then inside a small plastic Tupperware container or buy that westcoastshaving.com razor holder. Probably the cloth idea as I have cloths and the plastic container.

You might consider going to a local fabric/upholstery shop for the foam. The gentleman I worked with sold me the case foam for less than $5 and cut it down for me with his foam saw. I really didn't expect him to go above and beyond as he did, however, you might have some local expertise to make your project a little easier.

I like your original idea. Although it would be a fair amount of work, the concept is good, and you'd end up with exactly what you want.

You could use something like this Figure Foam to create the inside support for your razor. It's a foam tray that's partially cut into 1/2" squares. You then pull out as many squares as needed to create a molded cushion that perfectly fits around whatever it is you're trying to protect.

I love the WCS case, bought 2 and PIFed 1. Tried to buy another this weekend but they're sold out.

I like the looks of the iKon case, but would rather give my money to WCS. I'll probably buy the iKon just to see what it's like. Unless I futz around too long and they sell out.

Early on I bought a a Parker, but it is inferior.

I like the way you think. :thumbup1:

I have been looking at some hard cases at Walmart that are designed to carrry those small harddrives (Passprts?)... they seem about the right size
