What's new

Looking for some wood for scales in Canada.

I guess the title says it all, I live in Canada and can't find any 1/8" wood that would be good for scales in the city I live in.
Have looked on-line and they all want $30 or more to deliver a small piece.
Hoping some one would have a link to a Canadian supplier or a suggestion on how to get a piece at a lesser cost.
P.S. My first try a making scales :)
Thanks

Kinda sad! We have so much wood here! ;)

Have you checked on ebay, its still expensive, probably not much under $15, but at least cheaper than $30. Check for "wood scales".

Are you anywhere near a Lee Valley store? They sell 1/8" thick woods and usually a bit of a nice selection.

Look for some local Luthiers (acoustic instrument makers) - many guitar tonewoods are just the right thickness, and you may be lucky enough to find one who will share scraps/cutoffs.
Often you can find rosewood, mahogany, figured maple, cocobolo.

LMII is a great place to purchase head plates for instrument building - they can work great for scales, but often need a little thinning.

They have a sample woods kit for about $65.00 (or $5.00 per piece) that are cut to 7/16", 1/16" shy of 1/8" thick and are 3" wide and 7" long. Lots of wood for a nice set of scales. Some very nice woods are represented there.
