Longevity of Creams

Being new to wet shaving I only have 2 creams so far, Proraso and TOBS. Both indicate that they are only good for 1 year.

My question is whether that is really true? If so, how do those of you that seem to have 1 of almost everything use them up in time? Is there a way to store them to last longer?

I don't see myself using both of these up in a year with the several soaps that I have or am going to be trying soon.

If you store them in a dry place where it's not too warm or too cold, not a problem.

The label does indicate a year but you can go 2-3 years easy if not more. I just keep mine under the sink and don't have any problems with that!

I've had my Proraso only a few months, and it's already hardening up a bit. But it works just fine. Thanks kind of why I went to soaps...I knew I was going to end up with lots of product.

I have an old Palmolive tube of cream still in its box from the early nineties.. Trialed it a couple of days ago and it still seemed fine!

I had the same concern some time ago!

I emailed speick once, and asked them, if the cream is unopened and in it's tube, how long would it last. If I'm not mistaken they replied that more than 5 years!
Keep in mind that it doesn't have any preservatives, like proraso has.

Products that do container preservatives(parabens and such) do last longer, and don't go bad that easily.

Like Vlad,I also turned towards soaps, since they generally last longer than creams.

There are certain products that have a bad reputation of going bad easily, like:
Cella
TOBS(?)

I haven't had a cream go bad yet, in over 2 years. I have had a couple get really soft, almost soupy, after sitting outside in the mailbox in the 95+ degree heat in Houston. But they were fine after I brought them inside and let them cool down to room temperature.

Mine have never gone off before I finished using them. Keep the lid on tight and store at room temperature.

I have a TOB almond cream that is celebrating its 2nd birthday and it performs just fine.

I tend to buy more soaps and creams than I need - and have never had one go bad.

They should last awhile...even beyond their expiration dates. However, if you are worried, do what I do

Put them in a box, in the refrigerator (someplace where it won't freeze). When you are ready to use, take it out and leave it at room temp for 24hrs and you should be good to go. It has worked for me. :thumbup1:

If a cream hardens on you, one option is just to go with it: use it as a soft soap.

I learned that lesson with the old and dearly-missed Tom's creams, which were notorious for hardening almost immediately. I simply squeeze a tube into a Anchor Hocking bowl with a lid, and in a day or so, presto! Soft soap. It's not my original idea; I read it somewhere here a while back. Works like a champ.
