What's new

Lets talk Creed.

Ok I hear lots about creed but have never tried it. Is it really worth the price? What would be a good one to start with. Is there a way to get samples before one buys? Amazon has some bottles for really good prices like 4.0 oz of Green Irish Tweed for 145.00. Should one trust sellers through amazon. I know there are guarantees from amazon and they will give you your money back. I am tired of mainstream cologne and want something different. My paypal account is finally fixed and i have around 400.00 left to spend on fun stuff.

Are you in the Triangle area? Saks in Raleigh at the Triangle Town Center has a huge selection of Creed. If you go in, the Creed rep will walk you through everything. She filled up a bunch of generous samples for me the last time I was there. Do your homework on Basenotes before you go and pick out some you'd like to try. Personally, I think that GIT is kind of anemic. Royal English Leather and Bois du Portugal--now that's a different story. Also, if you can pick up a bit of Vintage Tabarome somewhere, it's a killer.

Also, I don't know about the Amazon dealers. Scentiments.com has a good reputation and the'll let you know when they have certain fragrances in stock. I think that there's an archived thread about buying Creed too. Happy hunting--go Heels!

I also think that Bois de Portugal is a fantastic scent. The Creed scent I wear the most is Orange spice. If you like citrus scents, it's a unique one. It has more of a wet, dirty type of orange smell. it also has quite a bit of staying power on me which is a problem with a lot of citruses.

Creed? Meh.

Royal English Leather, (Vintage) Tabarome, Cuir de Russie and the old stuff are good juice. The new stuff leaves me cold.

I have to agree with Henry. I have a bottle of GIT and MI that should last me another 10 years. After they are gone, I won't buy anymore.

Stay away from the (new) Tabarome. It smells like cat pee.

Hmm...maybe I should check out some of the older Creed scents. I have four of the newer ones (GIT, Original Santal, Royal Delight and Royal Water...why I kept getting them, I don't know), and honestly, I'm not thrilled with any of them. I don't hate them, but I don't think now that they are worth the price I paid for them. I haven't seen anybody say as much, but might those who like the older scents specifically not like the way Olivier Creed blends?

A word about buying on Amazon or eBay. Creed fragrances - especially the popular ones, like GIT - are notorious for being counterfeited. If you're not buying from an authorized retailer, and/or from someone you trust, you never know what you might end up with. You might get the real deal, or you might not; how lucky do you feel? This is especially problematic if you have never smelled a given fragrance before and thus do not know what the real thing is supposed to smell like. As for buyer protection via Amazon or PayPal, that protection all depends on your ability to prove the scent was a fake to begin with, which can be hard to do, assuming that you know it's a fake in the first place. I know the markup on these things is insane, but my feeling is, if you think Creed is worth the money, then pay for it; if you don't, don't wear it.

If you want something nicer than mainstream fragrance, Creed is certainly not the only place to look. Penhaligon's and Santa Maria Novella, to name just two of many, put out wonderful scents, and while they too are not cheap, they cost a good deal less than Creed.

A while back, I posted a thread asking, "which Creed is LEAST over-rated?" being aware of the strong feelings on either side. People have strong opinions on this brand.

GIT is great, and

Bois du Portugal is my favorite, though maybe a bit much for the hot Texas heat (more for fall/winter). BdP is a powerful beast!
Others to consider (and I've tried many and purchased about half dozen):

Selection Verde decant is a must. Great summer scent. If you can find the 8.4 oz flask at a decent price, let me know. Stick with the decant for now
Orange Spice has a great citrus opening, but gets a bit powdery.
Acier Aluminum is a great sexy spicy scent.Might be a bit much for heat.
Erolfa is an oceanic scent that resembles GIT and gets compliments
Bois de Cedrat is a great powerful lemon/orange citrus scent, though it fades
Original Vetiver is a hit or miss, depending on your nose.
Lavender is a great single-note fragrance. A bit sweet.
Virgin Island Water is coconutty for a hot "I'm on vacation" feel. The Creed "house note" comes through, making it unique.

You cannot go wrong at theperfumedcourt for samples/decants. This is a cheap way to try the various scents. You can try about 10 of them for not even half the price of a full bottle of Creed.

Neroli Sauvage, Vintage Tabarome, and Santal Imperial are my favorites. I've smelled quite a few others that I do like, but not for the price. I do NOT like Acier Aluminum, Santal Original (I think that's what it's called, or you could just call it Joop) Bois de Cedrat, or Virgin Island Water. Everyone should grab a decant of GIT at some point just to smell it. Whether you like it or not, it's one of the most talked about (and duplicated) colognes probably ever.

Speaking of old Creed juice, I've become a big fan of their Royal Scottish Lavender. I find it to be a great, unobtrusive, masculine lavender.

Since you're so far away from a Creed retailer, I recommend using the Perfumed Court. You can order a bunch of decants & check them out at your leisure. Just make sure you order all of them at once so you don't get socked w/shipping costs. You might also want to check out member Rorschuck's site. He has some Creed samples for sale & he's much cheaper than the Perfumed Court.

Have fun!

Hm. 'Wet, dirty orange' immediately made me think "Terre d'Hermes", which can be had at Nordstroms for half the price of a Creed, or online for far less than retail.

+1 Bois de Portugal.
+1 Vintage Tabarome.
+1 Cuir de Russie.

VT and CR, as far as I know are only available in the large flacons and that only occasionally. Rorschuck put together group buys of those two last time he was able to locate them.

Regarding counterfeit juice, yes, even Costco has been accused/suspected of selling counterfeit Green Irish Tweed. I would speculate that even if that were so, it was without their own buyers' knowledge.

I've read that the 4oz bottles are the most widely copied and you can feel more safe buying smaller or larger bottles.

In some ways, that actually makes it worse. It means that even if you screen out the sellers you suspect might be dealing in bad faith, and only buy from grey-market sellers you think are selling in good faith, you might still have a problem. Costco is great about taking products back, but again, how would you know if you have a fake or not, if you don't have anything to compare it to? I once read a post (on another site) by someone who bought a fake Breitling watch at Costco. The person didn't find out until he sent it in for service a couple years later, and the watch was refused service by the manufacturer, who identified it as fake. With that documentation, the person returned to Costco with the original receipt, and Costco refunded the purchase price. But that was a situation where the person had documented evidence from an unimpeachable source that the item was fake - plus it was a multi-thousand dollar item, something Costco could be sure the customer would not have rolled over on so easily. With fragrances, it might not be so cut and dried.

That is it exactly!

What's worse is the rumor I recently heard. A few weeks ago I was picking up a bottle of Acqua di Parma from the Copley Neiman Marcus. Got to talking colognes with the one of the women there. Apparently Creed will no longer be distributing all but two of the Private Collection line. If you want Cuir de Russie or Vintage Tabarome, it will require a trip to Paris. Why you'd want to make your best product even harder to obtain is beyond me. You could always make less...

This type of marketing has never made sense. The same is true of Mouchoir De Monsieur, Derby, Tabac Blond, etc.
