Lesson of the Day

Hello B&B patrons!! I thought it would be a nice idea to start a post with the lesson(s) that you learned when shaving today. I haven't seen anybody start something like this yet, but I could be wrong of course (please correct me if so). So let's hear something about your experience in wetshaving today, is there something you should've done better or maybe it's just your first time using said product? Feel free to post a 'lesson learned'.

I didn't learn this today, but actually a couple of days ago. While i've been using shaving soaps when I first started DE wetshaving, I learned to adapt by adding much more water than previously. I decided to take what I learned and switch to a shaving cream (Proraso Red) and couldn't figure out what I was doing wrong with my lather. After a couple weeks of using it, I finally realized that I was adding way too much water and the blade was not "gliding" across my face correctly. After fixing this, I got the thick lather that I want/need and BAM! Everything is perfect and I am not so frustrated anymore.

I learned, or rather relearned, when applying aftershave, if you get some on your lips, don't lick your lips. Doesn't taste good.

This wasnt today's lesson, but it's something I've noticed in the last couple weeks.

The sharpest blade isn't always the best. For a couple months, I switched to Feather blades exclusively and most of the time I did a one-pass SAS with them. I found that when I wanted a DFS or BBS, more than one pass with the Feather tended to get me some irritation. This weekend, I've been using the milder (and smoother) Astra SPs and a 2 or 3 pass shave for a DFS or better leaves me with no irritation.

As always, YMMV.

If there are contours in your neck, don't press the razor head to try to force the flat surface of the razor into the curved surface of your neck, it will not help.

Hi Seisxdm40,

Great thread. Nice tip; I learned that also after the first few shaves when I started.

One lesson learned by me today: When trying out new blades (that you have no experience with), don't get frustrated and try to get a BBS or even a DFS the first time by doing multiple touch up passes (I ended up doing 3 normal passes, and 2 touchups in one problem area). That only leads to razor burn, irritation, and the dark side of the Force. :a45:

If you're trying something new, change one thing at a time. If you try a new blade, stick with a soap and AS that you know suit you.
