What's new

leather excursion travel case from red envelope?

don't have one but it's not bad looking - personally i'm looking for an old fashioned leather "dopp" kit made out of a rich soft leather .

I've only had mine for a few months, but I like it a lot so far. The only quibble I would have is that if you fill all of the pockets completely, you can't close the case. They basically took the same design for a traditional wet roll, and instead of having the flat section in the middle for straights and such, they added more pockets. So instead of having straights etc that are a maximum of an inch thick, you have pockets that are two inches thick and can now overfill the case. You still get more storage this way, than in a traditional wet roll, you just don't get quite as much as you may think you do looking at the size of the pockets. If you get down to cubic inches of storage, you get more here than with a traditional wet roll, but not as much as with a dopp bag. All that said, I have no problem fitting everything I need into this kit with room to spare.

The leather/fabric/brass, are all top notch and well constructed. I have seen some negative reviews of the engraving but I don't have mine engraved so can't say for certain. Apparently, they engrave the name plate and send it along loose and you need to attach it yourself.

These look a little better.

The redenvelope one is 100 the col littleton one is 250. Is it really $250 nice> Maybe but my budget would not allow that. Even crazy splurging $100 would be my limit on a shaving roll.

Also the col littleton one does not have a hook to hang it.

My wife bought me one of these a few years ago and I love it. Stores all my wet shaving gear, has held up very well and looks sharp!

It actually looks like they changed/improved the design of the mesh pockets (zippered top) that I wish mine had.

If I was going to get a bag like this, it would probably be the No. 2 Shave Kit - Leather and Canvas from Col. Littleton. It looks of higher quality. You could fit more into it and still close it up. You also wouldn't have the bulk of the added leather, but it still looks quite nice. I generally check my back, but I always like to be ready to take it through security. The middle pocket on the Col. Littleton bag looks big enough to fit a quart size bag with all my liquids. All around, it's simply more functional and elegant.

I wouldn't settle for Red Envelope. If I was going to go for it, I would go for it with Col. Littleton bag. Is it worth it? Probably not, but right now I travel with the plastic nylon shave bag that my suitcase came with. It's functional enough. Something like this is a luxury and you always pay a premium for luxury.

But someone has money to spend at red envelope, and not other sites. I'm guessing employer bonuses that come in the form of a limited choice of gift cards :biggrin1:

It's a subjective call. I haven't seen the Red Envelope case in person but the photos make it look as if the leather is thin as it is apparently stitched onto the case. I do own the Col. Littleton No 2 Shave kit and the leather is very thick. I don't think the leather on the Col Littleton kit can be stitched in the same way. It's definitely pricey but there are a reasons for the difference in price. To me, it was worth it as I consider it a lifetime purchase type of item. As always here, YMMV.

Please note that I'm not saying that the Red Envelope case won't hold up or anything. I can't make such claims based on lack of experience with their case.

There is a D-ring for you to attach whatever you want to hang it. Or you can hang it from bathroom hooks which is generally what I've done so far.

You could fit more into it and still close it up.
To a degree. I can definitely load mine in such a way that I can't close it. It really does suffer from the same drawback as the Red Envelope case in that regard.

You also wouldn't have the bulk of the added leather, but it still looks quite nice.
Not sure what you mean as the Col Littleton No 2 does have a leather exterior.

EDIT: Oh, wait. I guess you're referring to the other No 2 shave kit with the canvas and leather exterior. While the leather is thick on mine, the added bulk is negligible IMO.

I think that the Red Envelope and the Col. Littleton have the same dimensions so I would imagine that you could probably only fit about the same volume of stuff in each bag. Though it is my recollection that the Col. Littleton bag has multiple notches for the straps where as the Red Envelope seems to only have one setting for closing the straps.

Still, I want a Col. Littleton if only for the reason that I can't help but shake the feeling that if I order a Red Envelope over a Col. that the Colonel will hunt me down and give me a talking to.

I have the Red Envelope model and I do like it quite a bit. I think these roll ups are pretty cool. One thing that's nice from the Red Envelope version is the canvas liner is detachable (held in place by brass snaps) and thus can be washed. One consideration is that these show up on the bay from time to time from a couple of re-sellers in new condition, sometimes with tags, and sell for $50.00 if you can wait. see item # 290505452821 which closed just several days ago.

Another consideration is that QED sells a roll up, that appears to be a Daines and Hathaway model with the adjustable buckle for only 15.00 more http://www.qedusa.com/daines-hathaway-british-military-leather-shaving-p-120.html

I think it's likely the QED model is of better quality overall but it does not have a detachable liner. If you can find the Red Envelope version for $50.00 I think that's the way to go, but for $100+ I think I'd go with the QED version. Hope this helps!

I have that excursion case, my girlfriend bought it for me.

I have to say, I quite like it and as another member mentioned the canvas is detachable so that's pretty convenient.

I also find it's holds most of the things I travel with quite efficiently.

All in all, I am very pleased with it.

I used the LLBean Personal Organizer for years but it was getting pretty nasty.. So, I picked this up not long ago.. $50, will be getting the matching carry-on duffel soon.
