Late to the Shark Week Party. Shark Platinum

I was finishing up a tuck of Voskhod's during shark week. I had bought 100 Shark Platinum's off of Amazon for a total of $8.94. Finally busted them out today. I had a really nice shave. 2 pass and very smooth with and against. They remind me a LOT of Parker's Platinum blades. I was much more careful with my form as I didn't want my Shark infested face to be attacked. I used Proraso Green Shave cream which glides nicely.

Strong recommendation and you can't beat the price. I love Voskhod, but after paying under $10 for 100 years ago, I'm NOT paying almost double.

I started Shark Week with a Platinum and was planning on changing it out halfway with a Chrome, but the Platinum shaved so well that I never made it to the Chrome. I won't claim they are at the top of my list of favorite blades, but they certainly fill a nitch in the enjoyable bargain blade category, and I imagine I'll always have some on hand.

I'm glad you are enjoying yours :)

Where do you compare the Shark Platinums to Dorco? The top of the class for the approximately $8/100 group is currently the Silver Star or [Gillette "Indian Green" and Gillette Nacet (when purchased in bulk off eBay)] for me, but I think the Dorco Prime might be a contender, too.

Quick rant about the price point of blades.

Razor blades are like barbeque charcoal for me. For example, I don't need the sharpest blade, just give me a comfortable shave 2 pass shave in the shower, and I'm going to shave the next day anyway. Just don't want a bloodbath, so there is a certain price point, I'm not going over. For example, I'm sure Feather makes a fantastic blade. Not for me at that price point.

When I use charcoal, I go with good old fashioned briquettes. The ash cleaning blades of a Weber kettle grill HATES lump charcoal. The pebbles get underneath the blades and LIFT them off the flush fitting. I'm also not paying $30 for a bag of briquettes. Good old-fashioned Kingsford or whatever's on sale, except the Wal-mart brand which is awful. Currently I'm using Cook's BBQ which I got at a bargain store here in MA. $2.99 for 8 lb. Lights great, bigger briquettes and is reusable.

For blades, just give me 6 good shaves.

I haven't used a Dorco Prime in a while, but I enjoyed the Vietnamese ST300s I picked up last year. I probably like the Dorcos a tad better than the Shark, but there isn't a giant gap between them when I've matched them with a razor that lets them shine.

That said, as you pointed out, there are some really nice blades in the sub-$ $10 arena that are superior. I literally could use a Lord Silver Star for the rest of my life and not need another blade.

I suspect my 100 pack of Shark Platinums will never be finished in my lifetime, but I have them when I want them.

I've come down on blades in a slightly different place. I enjoy a Feather shave in a mild razor, enough that I keep a few tucks around just when I get the hankering for that experience. I'll admit I usually only get that desire a few times a year, so it takes me a while to finish a five-pack tuck. When I use the last one, I'll toss another five-pack in my next order from somewhere and start over. I don't mind 'gifting' myself to a few 'deluxe' shaves a year, and I treat them as a special experience. Usually in conjunction with a special soap I'm hoarding the last puck of.

That said, I have plenty of other more affordable blades that give me 95% of the same experience, so they form the bulk of my collection. I'll never buy Feathers in bulk unless I just run across an insane deal on them, but I like to keep a few around.

More or less unrelated to the thread, my Weber kettle ash blades have been broken off for years and the lower grate is basically destroyed. I prefer lump over briquettes but I agree the cheap briquettes tend to be disappointing.

About the price points, the cost of 100 blades is less than so many things people willingly buy daily. A couple cups of coffee, drinks in a restaurant, cigarettes, etc. However, I myself am "cheap" and wouldn't want to pay double what a blade used to cost, but I also see the value compared to the cost of cartridge refills.

Time to get a new kettle grill. $139. When Mrs. Happy was shoveling snow, she left the lit accidently ajar. Completely rusted out the bottom of the kettle bowl. I went to replace the cleaning system and it collapsed. I bought the $139 grill put the ash bucket and cast iron grates from the old grill to the new one. Drilled a hole closer to the cooking surface and put the old thermometer in.

I've had 8 great shaves with the Shark Platinum. Really good blades for me. Got 5 days with the 1st blade, then my son decided to shave his goatee off. Used it a 6th time and plowed right through. No cuts. Great blades.
