What's new

Last two Gillette News i've had ?

**edited - sorry got my old/new mixed up**

I bought my 2nd gillette old type today. My first one i put away cause of uneven blade exposure and thought it was just that razor. Now my 2nd one seems to have that problem. When i place the blade in the 2 post head it seems to have too much "play" and wobbles a bit. Tightened it up and still had uneven blade exposure. So much so that when i shaved with it today, one side shaved fine but the other side felt like fire. What gives? Do most 2 post head types have this "play" problem?

The blades made at the time these razors were made, were much thicker blades. Modern DE blades are much thinner, hence the "play". Many people get around this by making a shim to go on, then the blade. Some people take one or 2 old blades, snip the sharp edges off, and use those for shims. Put it or them on, then a sharp blade and the "play" should be gone.

I wasn't aware of this fact. Thanks

I've heard this, but how do you go about cutting a blade?

Modern blades are so thin, you can do it with a good pair of scissors or kitchen shears. If you have access to a pair of tin snips, that would be much better.

I've got a good pair of scissors. I used them to snip the sharp edges off of 2 blades, then I super-glued those 2 blades together with just 2 small dots of super glue. When I need a shim, it's there and ready.

I've been shaving with NEWs and Old Typed for quite a while, face and head and I've seen no need to shim my blades.
I got back into DEs to simplify things if I need to shim and trim blades I might as well have stayed with cartridge razors.

Same here. Yeah, they're a little more challenging than a Super Speed, but a good shave is the reward.

If there's "play" in the head with the blade, a shim is necessary. Many News and Olds have this problem. Many don't. If you have one that does, a shim fixes it.

Does the shim go between the top plate and the blade, or between the blade and the bottom plate?

I've used it in both positions but have personally found better luck with the shim between the top plate and the blade. Others have found the opposite work better. YMMV.

Never thought of it like that.
Neither of my Old Types nor my NEW have any play whatsoever in them but I guess that doesn't mean that ALL of them are free from the play.

The other consideration, is if you are trying to create additional blade gap with the shim. Placing it between the blade, and the bottom plate (so the order would be top cap, blade, shim, bottom plate) increases the blade gap of the razor, thus making it more aggressive. :tongue_sm
