Is This Shedding Normal?

I recently purchased a T&H Super brush (which I believe is a Rooney 1/2) and have used it for about ten shaves. For the first nine shaves it only shed about five hairs however tonight it shed a good 10-15 hairs which was really annoying. I have done the same clean up and storage after each shave - rinse with hot water, squeeze water out, a good few shakes, then stored sitting on the handle in my scuttle (not in a cupboard).

Just wondering if the shedding tonight is 'normal' for a Rooney?

10-15 hairs in one shave seems excessive. Your brush might actually be a Vulfix, not a Rooney. You'd have to post a picture for us to know for sure.

Anyway, it doesn't matter who made the brush. I would speak to the retailer about the possibility that you may have gotten a defective brush. They should be able to replace the brush for you.

I would agree with the others that 10 to 15 hairs per use is excessive. Shedding along the lines of 1 or 2 per week for a couple of weeks is more inline with normal shedding. I had a brush that shed daily for a month and now is down to 1 or 2 hairs a week. In fact, I don't think it shed any hairs in the last couple of weeks.

The information given is correct. So many hairs really is too much. I would contact the vendor and ask for a replacement. 10-15 hairs is passable for the first shave or two, but after that indicates a damaged knot.

Thanks for the answers. I'll see how I go with the vendor - I'm confident a suitable arrangement can be made. :001_smile

I received the following advise from a vendor once. It might be worth a try. In my case, the brush kept shedding and was replaced but this procedure helped me know that the brush was truly defective rather than just not being combed out properly when it was made. Good Luck!

First however, what I ask that you do is this. Give your brush a good aggressive shampoo with your normal hair shampoo. Thoroughly rinse it out and let it dry out. When it is dry, comb it thoroughly with whatever wide gap comp or brush you have available. Then use it exclusively for a week or so to see if the shedding continues. At that point, you will have done everything that we would do with our own brushes before we classify them a “true shedder” and banish them to the shaving brush wasteland.

I have a similar shedding issue as shown in this thread.

I've followed these instructions you have posted and the shedding has gone away so far (my brush was loosing 1-2 hairs per shave and even more). Maybe it's too soon to tell the problem is gone, but I'm happy anyway.

Thank you very much for this information, I'm a newbie in brushes and I had no Idea about washing and combing them.

That's definitely excessive shedding and some kind of flaw in the brush.

Even my el-cheapo beginner VDH brush would lose maybe 5 on its worst days when I started using it. The shedding died down after use.

My new Ever-Ready brush has only lost one or two hairs TOTAL in my first week of use.

10-15 each shave is unacceptable. Definitely contact the vendor.

Apologies for reviving a very old thread, but I just wanted to say that the vendor replaced my brush without any hassle whatsoever. Since receiving the replacement brush I can definitely say there was a problem with the first one - the replacement feels completely different on my face (much softer) and has barely shed a hair.
