Is a ghost trying to contact me?

Long story short: I own a "touch" lamp which belonged to my Mom and is located in my bedroom. She passed away six years ago and I inherited the lamp. This lamp has turned itself on no less than 40 times in the past 10 days. It only happens while I am home and only if I leave the room. It has never turned itself on while I am in the room or if I am actually watching it, or during the night while I am sleeping. After I discover it is on, I turn it off. It will not go back on until I leave the room. I have even told whoever is doing this to stop and leave because it is not welcome in my home. This only causes the phenomenom to happen more frequently. I get strange chills all over my body when this goes on. What is the explanation?

Faulty wire?

Seriously, if it bothers you why don't you unplug it and put it away for awhile?

Think of all that humanity has accomplished over the last several thousand years. Tremendous artistic creativity, unbelievable technological advancement. Shocking brutality, breathtaking kindness. Imagine all of the people who have gone before us--Homer, Einstein, Florence Nightingale, Kant, Monet. Now imagine them in the next world, aching to convey something of what they've learned to us. Surely they'd manage something better than making a lamp go on and off. Don't worry about it.

I don't know about that. God started out by turning on a light.

It happened 8 times in the last 2 hours. I brushed my teeth for 5 minutes while looking at the light. Nothing happened. When I left the room, I came back 2 minutes later and the light was on.

contact the Ghost Hunters :biggrin1:

I am skeptical of the paranormal (yet think some of it it entertaining) - the things you mention seem to fit the bill of possibly paranormal, yet keep in mind most "paranormal" incidents can be explained/debunked through some rational/scientific-based explanation.

so while I wink as I say call the Ghost Hunters, I guess you could...couldn't hurt. Just don't expect that anyone can prove to you it's your mother trying to contact you from beyond.

good luck!

Set up a video camera to tape it, and one with night vision enhancement! Something might show up?
Our TV turns on randomly at 7, 8 or 9pm almost every night. No idea why.

Could be a faulty touch switch. They corrode over time and either the increased capacitance or shorting in the switch can cause the lamp to turn on. Vibration from your footsteps as you leave the room might be enough to close a shorted circuit. Ripples and surges in your power can also cause touch lamps to turn on.

Or you could be haunted.

Most of those touch switches are controlled by capacitance. Excess moisture in the air and a number of other factors can be at fault. I'd disassemble the switch and see if there is corrosion, dust, etc. that might be causing it to happen.

It's not a spirit - just faulty electronics. I had a friend who had a TV that turned itself on. It freaked everyone out. Later, as I began to fiddle more with electronics, I learned that failing power supply capacitors can be responsible for this.

is there a light switch that you've all ways been wondering what it does? Now you know.

Its electrical, ghosts aren't real, when you die you decompose and every one forgets you. thats all.

Touch lights are goofy. Stupid technology, really. I would not trust the things to behave in any predictable manner at all. I work with electronics, and these things are not predictable.

Here's an idea! Put a wet towel on the lamp or on the table next to the touch lamp. I'll bet your ghost will be driven away by the 'ghost' of humidity provided by a damp towel. It ain't "yo mama" making that lamp turn on. It's static (EMC or EMI/RFI).

Maybe you have it wired to the switch and every time you leave the room you turn off the switch, which turns on the lamp.

If you unplug it and it still comes on...then you can freak out

+1

electronics can indeed do weird things. had a touch lamp that drove me nuts because if i put it on my computer desk and walked on parts of the floor that made my desk vibrate it would change the setting of the lamp. was freaky the first few times but it did not take much investigation to find out there was a loose screw at the top of the lamp that let the lamp cover move and trigger the sensor.
