Ink Review: Pelikan Edelstein Turmaline

Okay, here is a color I would normally not review, as it really isn't a color for me. If you need a visible ink for, say, editing or grading, this would be a great ink. Thanks to Dave (Dave258) for the sample.

on edit: the blue dot on the water test was due to carelessness, not a result of the ink.

I wanted to show the shading, and since large pics are edited down, you don't get the full resolution. Here is a small writing sample that should show the shading better.

I really dig that shading@! thanks for the review!

You are welcome.

Okay, here is the finger stain test. Second pic is after 15 seconds with anti-bacterial liquid soap here at work. No, these are not the same pics- this stuff loves skin. Might have to break out the Go Jo.

Wow...is that stuff radioactive? That really pops...and I love the shading. As mentioned, would be great for highlighting or grading, but I'd definitely not want to read a full page of text in this color.

Interesting color, also not something I'd purchase, but a great color for the wife or daughter for certain.

Have a quick question here...when you guys say "hey, nice shading" what are you referring to? I always thought shading was thicker lines on part of the letter? Showing my ignorance here, but I'd rather know than guess ;-)

I think this was the Ltd. Edition Pelikan Ink of the Year, 2012
Nice review.

I'll be sticking with my blues and blue-blacks though.

Shading is a different shade or darkness detected from one part of a line to another, usually at the bottom or end of a stroke where the ink has built up a little thicker on the paper.

To me it can sometimes be distracting when trying to read a page.

I was under the impression (someone correct me if I am wrong) that shading was how the color varies while writing. Looking at my sample, it looks like it was shading due to increased pressure. It is prevalent in my downstrokes, which tend to be heavier.

Yeah, I'm with you. Goulets still has this ink for sale, I didn't see a mention limited edition.

On edit- I may have read your sentence wrong. Is the Ltd. Edition an entity of some sorts?

I just remembered seeing that on someone's commercial site and was wondering out loud.

After looking at Pelikan's site they say this:

Please note our always changing Ink of the Year, which brings a fresh and modern Edelstein Ink color to you – limited to one year only.

I have pens inked with Iroshizuku Yama-budo and Waterman Tender Purple. They make for great contrast against my typical blues and blacks when I write down notes during meetings and conference calls. No one I work with really cares.

Nice review Owen!
This was Pelikan's Ink of the year for 2012. This year it is the Amber which is ok, it is growing on me using larger nibs.

Thank you gents ;-) Now I know, and can see it in the writing sample.

I am getting my Vista ready for the next review, and can report that although this stuff may be radioactive on the skin, it cleans out of the pen easily- just like every other Pelikan ink I have tried.
