What's new

I'm thinking of make a set of scales to give away.

What are your thoughts of this? I would be planning to make them out of lace wood, and would finish the scales with ***(Wood Turners Finish). The person would have to pay for the shipping. I would include a piece of brass and washer for the person to pin the razor into place or would you rather have a micro bolt instead? I would be pinning the bottom. The scale design will be from a templates I have for making scales. Give me some opinions I would make only 1 set of scales to be won. Admins, if this is suppose to be in a different place let me know. Thanks.

Well, if you have a template for straight scales for a 1700s stubtail style razor, I'd be in. It sounds like a really nice thing to do. I think it should be restricted to each person competing providing a photo of a straight in need of replacements and then in turn providing photos of the refit.

i have a couple blades that need scales. a double duck, and a boker. pm me your address, and ill send them along to you. we could make this a "nothing to do" PIF.

Also just to let you know *** is actually harder than a CA finish and I personally think it looks nicer and is much easier to work with.

This is first an idea to get off the ground for one person to win. I need some ideas on how to do this. I was planning on letting someone pick the scale shape and I would have it made in a couple of days and then have it shipped off. I will be buying the wood blank here shortly. If I buy them locally they are like $13 and I get them online I would have to wait for the wood to come in. That is one of the reason this is a starting thread. I could make the scales out of a different wood. Let me look on ebay to see what type of wood I could get for a good price. I like lace wood because of the look of and it take *** really well.

I went ahead and bought this wood I think they would make a nice set of scales looking at the figuring on the wood.

That would look great as a set of scales for a razor. If you are going to PIF a set I dont think anyone would mind waiting a few extra days for the wood to come in or whatever it takes. I think it would be a great idea if you set up the pif with a link to the scale pattern, say that the winner gets to choose the pattern of their choice and have them include a measurement of the razor in question or even have them give a rough measure on how long the current scales are. Anyone would be a lucky recipient of that PIF expecially if you are going to pin one end and with the Wood Turners finish.

I think it should be restricted to each person competing providing a photo of a straight in need of replacements and then in turn providing photos of the refit.
I think this is a good idea. You pick based on the blade, you most want to receive your scales.

OK the wood should be here by next Thursday. I will then base it on the persons blade picture and based on this I will randomly choose someone I will leave the pif open for 3 days for everyone who wants in and based on the post number I will use a random generator to pick the winner.

Random is no fun.
How about picking the one you like best (damn, can anybody shave with a 20/16), or the one with the best Cinderella story attached (this was the last things that my great rand uncle owned after he was disposed by bankruptcy and they took it away from him when they threw him this French jail...)?
