ID help

I picked this up at an antique store and have exhausted every resource I know of to ID it. It appears to be a gold plated 1958 TV Special, but I can't find any reference to gold plated TV Specials. It's dated D2 and has the same knurling pattern as the TV Special has.The gold is mostly gone from the handle and as you can see some is missing from other parts.

Only reason I bought it was because I could tell it was gold under all of the crud and I thought someone might like it. I plan on eventually selling it, once I can establish what it is and what it might be worth, since I very seldom use double edge razors anymore.

Anyway, here's a couple pictures taken after several hours of soaking in soapy water and some scrubbing with a toothbrush. Any help would be appreciated.

I've never heard of a gold '58 TV Special. But the handle and flair end look like they've been stripped.

Gillette offered it as a promotion for Friday Night Fights and the Gillette Cavalcade of Sports.

Others here can give you more specific info and details.

Are you talking specifically about a gold plated TV Special, or TV Specials in general? I'm familiar with the history of the standard '58 SS TV Special, but I haven't been able to find anything about a gold plated model.

I have kept a close eye on the TV special from '58 as I have one (cased) and no one seems to have any information on them except the usual. I posted a thread a while back asking if anyone else liked them. Not too many posts came in. It seems that most people just regard them as another SS. You see them come up on ebay every once and a while and the don't sell for much more than a regular cased SS of the same era.

They do look nice in the collection though.

I agree, there's not much difference between them and a standard SS, other than the knurling pattern and a unique name. I'm just curious if this one is rare since I can't find anything at all about gold plated models, or if anyone else has seen one before.

Interesting find there Hoosier. I've not ever heard about a gold TV Spec. coming from Gillette. Someone of course could have added it later.... looking forward to hear what others have seen.

Yeah, it's possible that someone years ago had it replated.

As I mentioned, there was another thread about Gold Superspeeds in General, and some thought that they may have been "special" cases which were given by Gillette as gifts.
Wouldn't it be exciting to learn that this one was a gift, and as a TV Special associated with the Cavalcade of Sports that it was somehow related to that.

Yeah, I'd like to think it's something like that, but I guess there's no way to ever know for sure. Or how it came to be jammed in the back of a display case in a small antique store in Indiana.

Was MrRazor involved in that. Seems like, if anyone, him or Guido would know.

I checked Krumholz and it has no reference to a gold TV Superspeed but it does say that TV Superspeeds had the year letter "D". It says that they were released in response to Gillette being heavily involved in the televised Friday Night of Sport and The Gillette Cavalcade of Sports.

I would suggest that it's a limited release TV Superspeed.

I agree that for whatever reason it was gold plated that you have something special there. If it were me, I'd be holding on to it in hopes that eventually some information on it is found further identifying just why no one has ever seen another one.
