What's new

I think I'm all set.

So, I've got everything on the way to get started with some serious honing. I've got a sheet of glass here ready to go for lapping. I've got a Norton 220/1k, a Norton 4k/8k, a nice coticule bout as a finisher, a 10x/20x/30x loupe set, and a pack of 400 grit 3M wet/dry sandpaper. Am I missing anything? :biggrin1:

Looks like a good setup to me! :thumbup1:

Just remember to lap that Norton well...They need to be grid-lapped repeatedly to remove the rough outer coating that comes with the 4/8 (just speaking from experience)..

I've got a whole bottle of store brand baby oil left over from when the kids were little. As I understand it, baby oil is essentially just mineral oil. Would that work well?

That's what I used, smells good too. Clean up is very easy with dish washing liquid

Jon, if I can find a GD in the basement (or a vintage) tomorrow I'll hone it on your new coti, finish on oil and send it in the package with the stone.

That's very generous of you! Thanks again, Paul. This coti is actually a birthday gift to myself. You've made my day!

excuse the newb question, but what do you use to lap the nortons?
thx,
Bil

The glass as a true flat surface and wet sandpaper. Norton also makes a lapping stone but all reviews & comments I read say that they're junk.
