I Survived My First Straight Shave

Haven’t shaved since Friday morning in anticipation of this most glorious moment. I finally got up the nerve to put a straight razor to my face and shave with it.

I like IT. Yes, IT is here. And IT is a straight razor shave.

My routine -

Turned on the radio and tuned into the Sunday AM blues show. If I’m going down it’s going to be with rhythm and a good beat.

Washed my face and applied a hot towel for a couple of minutes.

Built a fine lather with Tabac. Brushed on that slick lathery goodness with the C&E BBB brush I got from Rob a couple of weeks ago. Sweet brush BTW, thanks Rob. Perfect for soaps and the right size for my face.

Took a deep breath, put my left arm over my head and stretched the skin of my right cheek as tight as I could. With my right hand gripping the razor (thanks for the tutorial Joel) I laid the blade flat on my cheek, raised the angle and pulled it down towards my jaw.

No pain, no irritation and best of all no blood. I’m thrilled!

Continued down past my jaw and began shaving my neck. Took a little bit of time to get this far, but finally found the correct angle. I felt the blade tugging halfway down my neck so I stopped. This is where my beard changes directions and grows E-W instead of N-S.

Now here’s where I got really scared because I am right hand dominant. According to all the straight shaving gurus I had to use my left hand to shave the left side of my face. To my surprise it was much easier than shaving with my right hand. With right handed shaving I found that I was using the fingers and wrist to try to guide the blade down and across my face.

Shaving left handed, I had locked my fingers and wrist in the correct angle and was using my elbow to pull the razor. I don’t know if this is considered proper technique but it sure felt better to shave this way.

I only shaved both cheeks and my neck down to my Adam’s apple. I couldn’t get the grip or angle to keep the blade from tugging on my chin so I skipped this area entirely.

All in all, a good experience. Can’t wait to do it again. :thumbup1:

I had several to choose from for my first shave, but I told SWMBO she could pick her favorite. She was more nervous about my first straight shave than I was. She chose this one...

Congrats!

The only moment more scary that the first shave is the first cut. Even when it's just really really minor, that first cut just makes you go "OH!" something fierce.

Nice blade! Congrats on the first shave!

After taking a little time off to perfect my stropping technique I decided this morning to go for straight shave no. 2 using MWF and a restored Torrey blade. Haven't shaved since Friday AM.

Total failure. I don't know if I couldn't find the proper angle with this blade or perhaps I dulled it while stropping, but it pulled so bad I had to stop. I couldn't even draw the blade 2" down my right cheek without feeling like I was pulling hair out of my face.

Finished shaving with my DE while I contemplated what happened. :frown::frown:

Well done. I couldn't do it: got a nick of about an inch in my jaw. Tried again a week later, same result. Then I switched to DE, never a cut or a nick since then (over 3 months, and I have tried all sorts of "cheap" blades from India and China).

Yay for first post!

You have to lower the angle. The sharper the razor, the worse it will pull with too high of an angle. Less sharp razors can go to ridiculously high angles without any irritation and still cut good.

Congrats on a getting a 'real' shave. The radio is a good thing but be sure it's music at modest tempo :001_smile Just saying.

OK, angle was the problem. I started with the blade flat against my face and raised the angle ever so slightly and began pulling it downward. It cut hair without that pulling sensation. Not the greatest shave, but much better than shave no. 2.

I'm still shaving my cheeks and neck only in N-S passes until I get this angle thing completely worked out.

Nice to see that it is going better.

Try to think of it as beard reduction, rather than elimination. With each pass, WTG, XTG, ATG; the beard will reduce in size. And when your really good with the straight, the last pass will eliminate the entire beard! :w00t: (Thanks to Seraphim for the analogy)
