I NEED a Job

I graduated from UC Santa Barbara in 2008, and I've not been able to find a stable job since. I've worked a few jobs but I either got laid off or the company went under. I have a degree in Sociology (big mistake) and I plan on applying for Law School for next year.

I need a job now though because I'm in desperate need of money. Any suggestions of types of jobs I should look into. I don't even mind working for minimum wage as long as the hours are normal.

Suggestions or nuggets of wisdom?

Have you considered Americorps VISTA? That's what I'm doing right now. I've been at it since last January. I also graduated college in May '08 and had trouble finding a stable job. The commitment is one year, you get nearly $5k to apply toward student loans or grad school, and it looks pretty good on a resume. Just a thought. If you want some more info on it, shoot me a PM or something.

Military. Decide what career you want, (a real one) and let them train you for your future.

Sorry lousy hours, but everything else is mostly good

That's a fine option for some. Many years ago, I recall discussing my situation with a Navy recruiter. Based on my health, he told me to come back "when the Russkies have made it to the St. Louis Arch."

Temping is a good idea. Many companies bring in people as temps and see how they work out before they are hired.

I've met a few people with Sociology degrees who have been successful in market research. Not doing consumer or phone surveys, but analyzing and categorizing information. Most sociologists are good at that. You could try working for a lobby group, political group, charity, or advocacy group (a paid position, not a volunteer). Some of your learned skills would translate well.

Demographers were actively recruited by financial instuitutions at one time, but I guess that's gone by the wayside. It's tough in today's economy and I wish you the best of luck.

It's a tough market out there. Have you considered joining the military? They can even pay for law school. As soon as I am done with PA school, I will probably join the Air Force or Army. Americorps is a great option as well, however, the programs fill up VERY quickly. You should join LinkedIn, Monster and Career Builder as well if you are seriously looking for employment.

EDIT: See if your undergrad school has any career fairs or career advising opportunities. They can be a HUGE asset to the job hunt.

Have you considered substitute teaching?? Subs het paid typically by the day, and in most states, all you need to get a sub license is 60 college credits. Pay can be pretty decent, if you get called regularly. Contact your local board of Ed and find out how to get a certificate.

With a sociology degree you can probably get a job dealing people via counseling, corrections, troubled youth, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, etc. This is what I'm looking at.
