I Finally Tried Proraso Red

People keep saying how wonderful Proraso is, so I finally broke down and picked up a tube of the Red. First impression: My lord, that package is HUGE! :eek2:(Keep your minds out of the gutters gentlemen.) At ~ $10 a tube, here in the States, you definitely get value for your money. So I lathered it up, and was very impressed by the cushion and slickness. From a purely functional standpoint, I'll agree that this is a top-notch cream. But then there's the smell. It smells like a Hippy's armpit. :prrr: Not that I've gone around sniffing many Hippys' armpits, but this is exactly how I would expect them to smell. I managed one pass, then had to wash it off and start again with something else. I think I can safely say that Sandlewood is not going on my list of must-have scents. This one will be going up for trade on the BST.

Hopefully I like the O Mehlor I'm trying out tomorrow better. :biggrin1:

hmmmm, I've no pride, I've smelled many hippy armpits at many a Dead show back in the day :whistling:

(not by choice, mind you) - found it to be much more Patchouli crossed with dead cow than Sandalwood IMO.

I love the Proraso red yum yum yum, if i hadn't a few tubes I'd take you up on your B/S/T

hope you have better luck w the O Mehlor too ;)

Don't give out on sandalwood just yet! I haven't used the Proraso red but have a sample of it and it smells nothing like any other sandalwood I have. Try something else because everyone does it differently.

i hated the scent initially then i got a tube in a lot off the bst. its growing on me and the performance is top notch

Good cream, tried mine tonight for first time.

Scent at first almost caused an emergency pif, however... It leaves a nice subtle scent afterwards, and performed good.

A few more test runs should decide its fate.

I hope the scent agrees with me because I love Proraso and I'm desperate to try it. I'm going on a mission to find it I hear there's an Italian supermarket near me so I'm hoping they carry some Proraso goodies. If not it'll have to be Amazon again, I wish I could find a place that stocked some decent shaving products so I could cut down on postage, imagine how much you could save over the course of a year.

All the same, I wouldn't turn down a patchouli laced Pro Raso either! I bet my girlfriend would have something bad to say about it though...
(I've "encountered" several women who wore a lot of patchouli - such a shaving cream would probably be a crazy train of memories!)

My next Fendrihan order will have this Pro Raso red on it for sure. I bought up 2 tubs of the old green shaving soap today, just because I'll miss that eucalyptus blast from the past...

Not tried the red. The green is one that I use in rotation. Looks like I need to move into the red to see what all the hoopla is all about

I wouldn't do patchouli, I just couldn't - would have immediate flashbacks from too many dead shows 9and not the kind I want) LOL though ironically if someone came up with a cream or soap with a Nag Champa scent - oh blessed Buddha! heck I might have to hit up Mama Bear, Mike or others.

err, does anyone know of a Nag Champa scented soap/cream?

and I LOVE the Proraso Red, the green.... they make a quality products period (though like anything, not all are for everyone)

mmm Patchouli and Sandalwood... YUM!!!!

I LOVE the smell of proraso red. One of my favs! Then again. I like "earthy" scents! :)

I like the scents of both the red and the green, but I'm more into earthy or medicinal smells, citrus is nice too. I'm not a big fan of things that are too flowery.

i am a couple of shaves in with the red and i am wanting to like, but so far i don't...but i'm trying ringo, i'm trying real hard...

Sandal + wood

Gross.

Why would anyone want to smell like a piece of wood that has been strapped to some guy's funky old foot with a leather thong?

I want the old Proraso back. Mo' mentholyptus!!!

From all of the reading I have done, the Proraso Red isn't anything close to being a true Sandalwood scent. If you want to try a great Sandalwood scent, pick up some Elizabeth Arden for Men Sandalwood Cologne. That stuff is heavenly!!

From all the reading I've done here, Proraso's should be in fact the true Sandalwood scent... I am not a specialist, and don't know true sandalwood scent at all, but many claiming they did said that Proraso Red was the real deal.

What I can say, though, it that every sandalwood scented product I've tried (TOBS, T&H, AOS, Proraso) had a very different scent from the others.

I gotta agree that the scent is just a bit too dank for me as well. Performance was great, however. Bring on the Blue!

First of all, I was a hippie and don't appreciate any negative comments about our time of peace and love.

I used the new Proraso a couple of times and hardly noticed any sent, but maybe I'm not paying enough attention to the nose.

Huh? What have you been reading? Proraso Red is as close to true sandalwood as you can get. And MYSORE sandal to boot. The biggest reason people don't seem to like it from what I've seen is that to a new user, the nose tends to pick up the sawdust-like elements to the wood more than the oil scent. That and people have more experience with accentuated sandal than the actual stuff.

Like I've said before...Sandalwood cologne fans will hate it. Sandalwood OIL fans will love it.

The new Proraso doesn't smill like a hippie's armpit...it smells like a Buddhist temple in winter, when it's snowing outside. Divine.

Ebay artisans do. But what I've found is that they all use different fragrance oils so the "nag champa" you get is not really nag champa. It's in the same ballpark sometimes (and sometimes not at all) but never quite there. And believe me, I've sampled about 15 or 20 types of nag champa incense, so I know the scent varies, but the soaps available never seem to match the basic scent profile that all the different incenses share. I got a good one recently that's in the same ballpark, but it's not close enough.

Your best bet is to contact one of our artisans and see if they have the Satya Sai Baba branded Nag Champa fragrance oil, because that's the only way you'll be able to get what you're after. I have the Sai Baba bath soap...if I could get a shaving soap in that scent, I'd be in heaven.

I apologise. I intended the comment to be taken in a silly way. I never meant to offend anyone. I absolutely respect the peace-loving philosophy at the heart if the Hippie movement. I suppose I was just taking a cheap pot-shot at the stereotype. Again, I'm sorry if I offended anyone.
