What's new

Proraso revisited (Red). Amazing.

I enjoy Proraso Red - but only when the weather is not summery like it is now

Just so it does make it sound like it's an objective fact that it's the best, I will offer a counter. I will say that while I love the scent of the red, I really do, Proraso is the least slick cream I have ever used. Compared to Nivea (6 years of exclusive use), Lavanda, Musgo, and my two winners, Speik and Palmolive. I had a tube of green many years back, and it got tossed after a couple uses, primarily because my wife hated the scent.

Maybe I have a bad tube of the red. It wasn't for lack of trying.

Have you tried adding more Water? I find that Proraso takes much more water than Palmolive 💪

I agree, Proraso Red is beautifully slick, worked up with enough water. In fact the same can be said for the other lines.

I also prefer it in the Autumn/Winter months. Something about the Sandalwood scent, which I love, hits a little better for me then. But I will still use it year round - more so if I shave in the evening before going out in Spring/Summer. I think it sits nicely behind the colognes/edts I mainly use.

I used the Proraso Red cream this morning, got an excellent shave! Easy to lather, and while I’m not always a sandalwood scent fan, this is quite nice. I’m going to use if for a couple more shaves then try TOBS Peppermint. It will be hard to compare with the minty and cooling sensation of the Peppermint, but I’d like to see if I can get an opinion on other factors, like slickness.

It is an outstanding cream, I’m not sure it outpunches some of my other favorites. But very, very happy with the shave today.

John, I think a more appropriate comparison would be between TOBS Peppermint and Proraso GREEN, not Red. Anyway, glad to hear you are happy with the shave.

P.S. Next to try is the wonderful Proraso Blue. But there is no need to buy anything, just get a flight ticket to Rome and I'll make sure you go back home with a 2 years supply of the entire Proraso range.

I don't know what happened to my Proraso in the red bowl.

The white paste has become a strange green color.

@Marco Yes, I know it compares more to Green, I was comparing the shave quality. I do have Proraso Green, also, this week I'll do a comparison between that and the Peppermint. After 13 years of having green in my den, I got the Peppermint to try something different. The TOBS Peppermint is quite nice, actually.

Hmmmmm. Not that Amazon is the best rating authority, however, the TOBS Peppermint has over 33,000 reviews, and the Proraso Green has over 11,000 so it is a serious number of reviews, and the review score and distribution is practically identical.

I think tomorrow I'll use two brushes and do a side-by-side half-face shave with the both of them. Why not? Followed by Aqua Velva Ice Blue. 🤓

John, I have not used any British cream for a long time. At the time I did there was one cream that outperformed all the others and by a large margin, too. It was Truefitt & Hill Ultimate Comfort, a sublime lightly Lavender scented marvel. Not sure it is still being produced though.

It is, actually, and I remember you being very impressed with it. I've used their 1805 and it is a great cream. TOBS vary for me, my best shave was their now-discontinued Avocado cream. It was a stellar performer and I think perhaps there has been nothing before or since better for those with very sensitive skin. Their rose cream is OK, not great, IMO. And the 33,000 reviews I quoted, I think is total reviews for all the TOBS creams. But I find the Peppermint to be very, very good.

I'm looking forward to tomorrow's half-and-half shave. I'm getting into this game again, it's much fun!

Glad to hear John! And please let us know how tomorrow's experiment ends up!

I agree with you about TOBS Avocado cream. That was spectacular.

Looking forward to hearing back about your half/half shave.

I too started out with Proraso since it was readily available at the supermarket. I eventually got into more expensive creams/soaps and I still pick up fancy stuff when I come across it (mostly based on reviews). I always loved the Proraso red, both in tub and tube. I think I'll go pick some up this weekend. Can anyone offer any opinion on tub vs. tube? Thank-You

I like them both. The tube is more convenient and maybe it’s my technique but I seem to get a tad thicker of a lather from the tube. I face lather more often than not with the tube as well so that could explain the thickness difference. The tube I just recap and put in the drawer but the puck/bowl I let it air out for the night. Both great products but the choice is a bit subjective. Don’t forget the aftershave splash and balm…good stuff too! Enjoy 👍

Today I finished my red Proraso sandalwood bowl, soon I must make another good supply.
I prefer it to Proraso green and used for many years,at least two..

I use BOTH, the soap (in my vintage Old Spice mug) and the cream. In fact I just ordered another tube of the cream, as I'm running low. I choose which one to use depending on how big a hurry I'm in when I shave (I find the cream is a little faster....).
