What's new

I broke the tip of my Spyderco Delica at work! Can it be fixed?

I know there are a lot of knife aficionados here on B&B. I wouldn't necessarily consider myself one... but I do love my Spyderco, and I am severely bummed out about the tip. It happened while I was scoring the tongue off of a piece of leather tile, of all things. It just barely broke, but it's enough to destroy any sharpness the point had.

Does Spyderco handle this sort of thing? I never filled out warranty paperwork or anything though...

Thanks in advance.

As long as you didn't break off very much, you can just round it off into a point shape with a grinder and re-sharpen. It isn't real pretty, but it works fine.

Well it seems that you won't be able to send it to Spyderco, per their warranty (http://www.spyderco.com/edge-u-cation/index.php?item=10) as it says they don't cover damage of the knife due to user error.

However your best bet may to be to grind down the spine of blade untill a new tip is created. This has worked for me in the past.

I have done that, to salvage a Victorinox Tinker (the main blade). It worked pretty well. I lost a couple of mm of length, and the point set deeper in the handle when closed. It is far easier to do this than any other method.

Wouldn't hurt to contact Spyderco and see what they have to say. I have heard they are a good company to deal with.

I did the exact same thing to my Spyderco a few years back. It is also old enough to have a plastic belt clip moulded into the handle rather than the metal clip they now screw on the handle. I had accidentally broken it off as well. They fixed the tip and screwed in a new belt clip and sharpened it for the princely sum of ten dollars. Now that was a good decade ago so it would be best to call and see what they will and won't do and how much it will cost. Spyderco is really good at customer service.
