What's new

i broke down and order a straight

What do I need to unlearn from de shaving?

What are the hidden mysteries of straight razor shaving?

What's something you wish you knew when you started?

Not much, you already know how to lather, make it a bit runnier
What are the hidden mysteries of straight razor shaving?
No secret, takes a deliberate stroke, hard to do with a sharp object near your face
What's something you wish you knew when you started?
The most important thing to start with is a shave ready razor, with out a truly shave ready razor it is not going to work

Enjoy the journey

Different ways to angle a straight razor vs a DE

You will cut yourself with a sharper edge vs a dull one

Wish my first straight wasn't a 7/8 but smaller

Doc nailed soem basics.

you def want to elarn how to stretch your facial skin (which will help w DE shaving too)

def check out the B&B wiki on straight shaving. so much information there!!

congrats and welcome to the dark side!!

+1

This was the thing that improved my straight shaves the most. The second most important thing for me was learning how to angle the blade correctly, so as not to remove my skin along with my hair.

Be patient, once the muscle memory kicks in it is a breeze. Some of us - cough, cough - take longer than others.

Check out GeoFatboy you tubes on it and watch them over and over. You pick up little tips each time. Like jutting your chin up or down or pushing your jaw sideways. And s-t-r-e-t-c-h that skin.

Then enjoy the looks you get when you let it slip that you use a straight razor. Most folks always ease back from you, almost as if you just might pull one out of your pocket. It is a hoot.

This is coming from a former DE shaver...

Some gentlemen may disagree, but.. with straight shaving, I imagine that I am scraping the hair of my face, slow purposeful scraping hair of face strokes.

Don't do long strokes like you might have with DE shaving, half and inch to an inch "scrapes"

I am intrigued as well, but am spoiled and need BBS every day, what about around nose and chin around mouth, sorry to hijack your thread general

Just realize that it will take a few shaves for you to become comfortable with a straight near your face. Remain calm, go slow. Concentrate on With The Grain strokes first. Plenty of time to learn the others and a WTG stroke will yield a fine shave for anything short of a big night with your lady.

Some good advice here. I always suggest that people new to straights look up Dr. Chris Moss' book on Straight Razor Shaving....available free on the main page of Shave My Face. It's pretty much the best single-location source of information on straight razor shaving.

Get a styptic pencil. Nicks are inevitable at the beginning. Begin with the cheeks and move on to more difficult areas with some practise. Don't attempt to shave your chin at your first shave. I did. The result wasn't pretty. Don't do ATG passes at your first 50 or so shavings.

I think he's in the right place already. :001_rolle

get a cheap strop and use it until you get the motion down. dont buy a good strop until you are certain you will not mess it up.

Up to a point you are correct. I just think that having a book to start with makes picking this up easier. After that, yeah the forums are the best place for information.

I don't know, lots of great tutorials, sticky threads, perspectives from many more than one person, and the support system of great, helpful members who will keep the razor on the face and away from the wrist. All of the information is here. Who needs a book? YMMV of course. :biggrin1:
