What's new

I broke down and did what others have done

I went and used my old cartridge razor again.

Just for logs and grins I pulled out the M3 today. Even put on a fresh new blade. I did a one-pass shave, N-S.

Results were acceptable shave. Some rough spots. No irritation. Stubble noticeable in a few hours.

Seems I do recall getting a lot of irritation before being a wet shaver.

I have an AOS handle for Mach 3. It's nice and hefty, but there is no weight at all in the head of the razor. The cartridge IS the head. I was fearful of doing a 2nd pass. Even if I were to get great shaves from the M3, blades are way too high. If they lasted more than 3 shaves, I'd not complain.

Being new to de shaving and previously using a mach 3, the pressure difference is huge. I found that it worked best doing one wtg pass with a fair amount of pressure. However, if you have 4+ days of growth, an atg pass will result in an amazingly smooth shave. I have yet to replicate the success I have had with a mach 3 atg pass on 4+ days of growth. DE definitely kicks the crap out of a mach 3 as far as daily shaving, though.

Yeah. I still have a %$#@ load of cartridges that I bought (I thought I would save in the long run...) for my M3. I grab and use it occasionally just to use it a little. Stubble does seem to come back very fast, but the shave is comfortable for me...

I recently used my M3 too. I did a 3-pass shave (wtg, xtg and atg) with a couple of touch-ups. BBS, no irritation, and it lasted well into the next afternoon. For me, I've come to the realization that there's nothing wrong with cartridges per se. They work almost as advertized, though I believe they claim to get something like BBS w/ one pass. For me, a single cart wtg pass is right in the middle of the SAS level. At the minimum, I prefer to include an xtg. However, the same could also be said of the two bladed sensor or other two bladed carts. The only other benefit of cartridges, at least since i've been shaving with DE, is that I can shave fairly recklessly -- no thought really -- and not get nicked. But with carts we end up paying a premium for added technology (extra blades, lubricating strips, swivel heads...) that don't necessarily add enough benefit to be worth the cost. With DE shaving, I do the same number of passes in pretty much the same time, and all it costs me is a little bit of concentration on what I'm doing.

I personally have no animosity towards the cartridge razors. I find I can get a good shave with them all pretty much, M3's, Fusion's, DE's, and straights..
Just since I have spent all this time learning to use a straight (1year+), I find I like the challenge and the shaves it provides..
The pleasure of the process does it for me.

WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY?

I have never had the desire to take a step backwards. I never had any bloody disasters with carts, but I realize now that I endured a decade and a half of sub-par shaves due to my ignorance.

I dare you to try to sell the cartridges on BST

I get great shaves from my Mach3. My shave when I went back to the M3 was too good to be true. Totally BBS. Even BBS with DE's for me is like BBS- cause I have a few rough spots. I'm just worried that an M3 will give me ingrowns

I only use my M3 when I am in a huge hurry, which happens very rarely. It always gives an acceptable shave, but I wasn't having problems before I started wet shaving with a DE. The DE shave is always more relaxing and far more luxurious. Instead of shaving being a necessity, I look forward to my next shave.

I don't have enough time during the week to DE, and use the M3 with a nice Rooney handle. Luckily, I've never had the skin problems from cartridges that so many do. 2 passes, WTG and ATG, give me near BBS every time. I chalk it all up to good prep.

Does using a DE take you that much longer? I would only be able to do it faster due to less passes, but two passes is two passes, right?

It does, since my DE shaves are 3 full passes with touch up. The multiblades clear the decks in 2 fast passes with very minor touch ups. It helps that I know the map of how the hair grows, so ATG really is ATG.
