How many shaves?

I'm new to the de world. I did notice a huge difference between the blade that shipped with my Merkur versus the new personna I put in today. Even after three passes it was so smooth. How many shaves do you go with one blade? What do you do with your razor and blade between shaves?

Welcome to B&B.

I change the blade after 4 shaves but YMMV. I rinse the razor under a good stream of hot water, shake it to remove most of the water, and let it air dry on the shelf in the den.

How many shaves you get depends on the person doing the shaving and the blade. When I try a new type I keep using it until I get tugging and then use it one less time than that. So if on the fourth day for example I get tugging I know to only use that blade type 3 times.

In between shaves it gets rinsed off whil in the razor and then laid on the counter out of reach of little hands.

Terrific. Thanks. I'm sure this is fairly remedial stuff, and something I suppose I'd just figure out with practice, but I appreciate it.

Sometimes it's hard to tell when the blade starts to fall off (it can be subtle). I happen to have a large reserve of blades (I was alarmed by rumors last year that the big DE manufacturers were going to slow down or stop, and stocked up), so I simply change blades automatically after three shaves.

I got moves like Jagger
I use Rapira (pink/black/blue box) and Shark SS when I use a DE or shavette. I generally change after 3-4 shaves, but used just one blade (2 halves) in a shavette for a week when in Mexico and I think I could have gotten another shave or two without issue.

Welcome aboard.

....I did notice a huge difference between the blade that shipped with my Merkur versus the new personna I put in today....
Yeah, tell us about it. :001_rolle

...How many shaves do you go with one blade?...
Between three and four shaves. I shave in two passes, every day.

...What do you do with your razor and blade between shaves?
After each shave I take my three-piece razor apart, shake the top and bottom plates. Set the razor pieces on the dry facecloth that is already flat beside the sink. I rinse the blade under the hot water making sure the stream hits the edges on both sides. The blade then goes on top third of the facecloth and fold the facecloth over it. Gently pat and repeat. I then move to the razor parts at the bottom of the facecloth and make sure they are all dry. I set them inside the cupboard that serves as shaving den.
The blade in use and the razor parts wait there quietly (and dry) till next morning, when cheerfully do their job again.

Thus far, my best for a blade is three shaves, each with three passes. Astra Superior Platinum can't do that for me, though. They are lucky to make it to day two. Gillette Silver Blue and Feather are the best that I have used. Keep us posted on how it goes for you!

My experience:

Astra SP = Two days
Feather = Two days
GSB = four to seven days typically, currently close to day 14 on a blade
Everything else = Three days

I don't do anything but rinse the razor with the blade in it and put it back in its stand.

For me three to four shaves with a Feather-about the same with a Personna Red. I take the blade out of the razor after each use though and let it air dry (in a safe place of course).

I get 5 shaves out of my Treet Platinums. I can get 7 or 8 out of Feathers (but have stopped using them). Merkur blades seem to last for about 3 shaves

depends on the blade. i get 15 shaves out of a super iridium, but only 5 out of a personna red. if you want the most shaves for your dollar try super iridium for sure.

I get two shaves out of my blades no matter which brand it is. If I try to stretch a third day out of a blade, I get a lot of irritation on my face. I have really thick hair and it dulls a blade fast.

Between shaves I take the blade out after I rinse of my razors and make sure everything is completely dry before putting the blade back in.

I have to revise my original post. I now do two shaves per blade, at which point I switch to the next blade and razor in my rotation. I use GSB, Blacks, and Feather blades in my regular rotation, but my girlfriend and I have some new blades to try thanks to our friends here. I have the razors listed in my signature that I rotate through, two shaves each, along with two new razors to add, but it says my signature is too long when I try, for some reason. I wish I knew how to make the different lines in my signature as some have... Anyone know how?

Back on topic, my two new razors are a 1959 Gillette Fatboy and a 1962 Gillette Slim thanks to a member here. Had my first shave with the Slim tonight and loved it, though my technique clearly needs work to get used to it. Used a Black in it, and was highly impressed. However, after one more shave, the blade goes to the bin and the razor gets lightly cleaned and stored safely away till its next turn. That's just how I do things. :)
