How Many Bowls for Shaving?

I'll preface by saying that my Shave Den has a ridiculously huge old-style sink which would be simply wasteful to fill in order to shave. That said, I have one bowl for the soap, one in which to lather, and another to hold the hot water to dip the brush/clear the razor. There's yet another bowl, when you count the fact that I have a second soap queued up.

How many different bowls/mugs/scuttles do you find necessary to shave?

I make the lather on my face, so the only bowl I use for a shave is the one I keep my soap of choice in.

I may be a bit retentive, but I like to use a fresh bowl for each dip of the razor. Life has become much easier since I bought this conveyor belt from a sushi restaurant near me that recently went bankrupt.

Can you not just fill the sink a bit of the way?
1. It would still be wasting water, relative to using a single bowl to hold the water.
2. Without investing in a new stopper, I'd still have to refill the sink between passes.
3. That's not any number of bowls. :001_tt2:

I used to, but then one weekend I got a good look at my sink after my Wife and 8yr old daughter had done their thing - not exactly sanitary... :eek2:

Now I use:

1 Bowl / Tub for the soap or cream

1 Bowl for lathering

1 Largish mixing bowl I use as a basin for soaking my brush and rinsing my razor (I also float my lather bow in it to keep it warm)

I use a woodhead scuttle, a VDH bowl for soaking my brush, and a mug/ramkin for each puck of soap in use, or the lidded plastic container that came with the soap.

In a rush, I run hot water on my brush, lather on the puck in my mug, and apply lather.

I rinse my razors under running hot tap water which I turn on/off for each rinse. Wet lather rinses off faster than dry lather. Hot water gets soap off faster than cold water.

Running water is not traditional, but is less risk of striking and damaging my edge. Wiping the blade on a towel or sponge is an alterative to rinsing.

Two--one for soap, one for lathering or adding cream. I want a third because my primary lathering bowl is egg-yoke yellow. Electric or azure blue would be more my style.

Bowl free here also. Face lathering took care of that. And if I'm using a boar brush, I just wet the knot and sit it on the handle while I'm showering per Leisureguys method.

I have one small mug I use to soak the brush while I am in the shower. I have a Old Spice mug that I have a puck of Sterling Anise in. I have small dish that has the remnants of my VDH Deluxe puck. And I have Robert Becker scuttle that I use more for lathering cremes (I face lather the rest of the time).

I don't have the luxury of a large bench in my bathroom (and I have a wife, so bathroom real estate is distributed in the very fair ratio of 90:10 in her favour).
So I have 1 bowl for soap and one for lathering. The soap bowl stacks inside the lather bowl after use. I fill the basin and rinse in there. After I finish, I wipe the basin out, so it is always sanitary.
This works well for me, but I would like more space...

5 small rice bowls with samples in them, a soup cup with with a big sample, a ceramic cereal bowl with a puck in it, a coffee/tea cup with a puck in it, a big wide mug with a puck in it, a miso bowl with a big a big sample in it, and another bowl to play with lather in. Oh, and 2 Old Spice mug with nothing in them yet and an Aramis mug to soak my brush in. I'm still looking for more bowls.

OH, and my Robert Becker scuttle is on the way. :biggrin1:

I now normally face lather, but from time to time I'll use my scuttle and make a really nice lather to use on a very relaxing drawn out shave. :thumbup1:

I have an oversized mug that I picked up at a truck-stop in Ontario with a picture of a Moose on it, I love it but I only use it to soak my brush while I shower since I exclusively face lather. So just the one for me.
