I am like kwickone. I base my choices on the season. Go for fresh/citrus/musk scented lotions in the spring and summer, and spicy or woody/leather In the fall and winter. On days when wearing a cologne, I base the aftershave choice on the cologne to be worn. When not wearing cologne, I select the aftershave from what intrigues me that day.

I mainly use spray cologne, just pick one and go. Some of the ones I like actually give me a rash if I use them daily so once a week is usually the go.
Flip of a coin. Heads is artisan/domestic, Tails is european/international.

weekend : aftershave/cologne
The second thing is time of year, spring,summer, etc. determines scent.
Finally : humidity, high humidity-alcohol splash. Low humidity (dry) glycerin a/s
normal humidity- propylene glycol
This way, you always have the perfect a/s for the situation
