How do you clean soap scum/gunk off of your razor?

My Muhle R89 now has an unlovely coating of white stuff on the neck, on top of the cap, and underneath the base plate. How do people get this stuff off as quickly and easily as possible without damaging the razor? I thought about vinegar, but read that that will damage razors and to NOT DO THAT.

So, what do you use?

Wash then soak overnight in chlorox followed by a good hard scrub with 100 grit sand paper. Oh and make sure to put razor into the pot of boiling water for ten minutes to neutralize the above cleaners. Most important use a soft cloth to lightly buff razor to a brilliant shine!

Isopropyl Alcohol. You can find this at any drug store or target/Walmart etc. Take a small coffee mug, cup or something similar and pour a little into the mug. Enough to submerge the razor head. Let it soak for 20-30 minutes and then wipe whatever residue is left off with a hand towel.

Or go to a beauty supply store and get some Barbicide. You cut it with water (instructions are on the bottle). Same deal as the alcohol as far as soaking it and cleaning. Barbicide is what barbers use to clean their clippers between customers.

Was this a shot a sarcasm? I don't think bleach and sand paper are a good idea

Do not use 100 grit sandpaper. It's just soap/cream residue. A little liquid soap or toothpaste with a soft toothbrush will do just fine.

Hi Teppanyaki,

I definitely clean my razor after every shave. But then again, it's probably because I LOVE traditional DE shaving so much! :blushing:  I just want to take care of all my items after switching over to this wonderful hobby. :)

I use a pump of my Clearly Natural (Glycerin, All-Natural) Hand Soap, and an old toothbrush. Removes everything just fine.

Enjoy!

TYVM all; will try the toothbrush with either isopropanol soak and dish soap, or dish soap without isopropanol. Probably with . . .

I tell my butler to do it.

dish soap work best because there are no abrasives in it like in (some) toothpastes.

I clean the inside with a toothbrush and a little hand soap.

Everyday I dry the outside (including the underside) with a soft towel - obviously don't wipe against (into) the blade - and this takes care of most of the problem with about 5 seconds of work.

A quick wipe with a soft, clean towel is what I use mostly.
It removes almost all of the buildup in a few seconds a leaves a shiny razor.

When I want to remove all of the buildup, Scrubbing Bubbles does very well.
