holiday cocktail recipies

Jaeger tea does it for me this winter. The original recipe is 1 part dark rum mixed with 3 parts freshly brewed black tea. In my version I use black tea with a teaspoonful of honey and slice of lemon and brandy/cognac instead of rum.

Sounds good, thanks for the tip.

Since I am moving on Jan 15th, there are a lot lot of normal traditions that I am not doing this year... this one has been especially killing me and I think I am going to break down and do it this weekend..

You can buy premade glug spice packages and I have had wonderful luck with them in the past. I am not motivated enough to make up my own spice recipe, but I am willing to bet a bottle of this that KennethW has a good one somewhere....

You need a huge pot.....

4 bottles port wine add to pot and simmer. add 1/4 cup sugar and 1 package of glug spices.. simmer for a while and then peel the skins off the nuts, throw away and puts nuts back in pot..

Add 1 bottle each brandy and vodka or rum.
Add 3/4 bottle grain alcohol.

Bring all of this to a boil and then ignite to burn off the grain... put fire out by placing lid on the pot.

Let it cool and then pour back into empty booze bottles making sure you get some of the spices, raisins and nuts into each bottle...

Serve hot in a coffee mug...

I am planning to make coquito (see eggnog thread) and then I will reserve a portion of the mixture, lighten it up with coconut water, and use this as a base for coconut mojitos. I may even get some fresh herbs and do a further break-down of this reserve: coconut lemongrass, coconut rosemary, coconut basil, coconut mint, etc.

Not holiday per se, but should be a fun experiment.

What exactly is a mojito, I hear about them all the time and have never had one....

My mulled wine is pretty tasty. Still tweaking it, but here's the idea:

1 bottle red wine
8 cloves
6 allspice pods
4 cardamom pods—lightly crushed
1/4 cup (65 ml) water
1/2 cup (125 ml) sugar
1 star anise wheel
1/2 sliced orange—and zest!
1/2 sliced lemon—and zest!
3/4 tsp (4 ml) cinnamon

Kenneth, I am going to try this... how much zest do you add and do you chop your fruit?

Hi Mama Bear,

A mojito is a drink that originated in Cuba and started gaining popularity there around the 1930s. South Beach, Miami has helped its resurgence in the last ten years or so. It is muddled limes and mint with rum and sugar, over ice, topped with soda water, then shaken. :thumbup1:

In NYC, the mojito has made a fierce come back in recent years. It's not exactly available everywhere, but it's available a lot more than it ever was. It's growing popularity has spawned variations: the mango mojito, made with mango nectar; the strawberry mojito, with strawberries added to the muddling, etc. I think I may have had a coconut mojito in South Beach that used coconut milk or water in the mix, but I can't recall. I've definitely had a coconut margarita that used coconut milk in the recipe.

It's a great summer drink, refreshing and sweet. It is similar to the caipirihna (from Brazil), but that does not have mint and it's made with cachaca (Brazilian sugar cane liquor) in place of rum. Also it's less sweet than the mojito.

Chirimoya where did you learn to make coquito?? I was born and raised on the island so I grew up drinking coquito. My Uncle to this day still sends me a bottle every year. He makes it with Don Q Cristal. This year's bottle is again very good and strong. Drinking coquito takes me back home every time.
