What's new

Hmmmmm.....

I saw this statement on a custom brush makers site.

"The badger hair is imported from China where small village co-ops farm the animals and harvest the hair just before summer so that it can grow back before winter time (the badgers are not harmed). This information came to me directly from a representative of the company in China that supplies the hair. So I am quite satisfied that no endangered or protected species are affected by the use of Chinese badger hair in shaving brushes. Thanks to everyone that was concerned and brought this to my attention!"

I think this person is misinformed. My understanding is that the Badgers are killed.

That's also my understanding...

nice custom title...

I've always heard they were killed. And that they did end up in the food chain. Badger steaks, anyone?

This is what I read recently; it's actually quite ethical.

FYI: Most commercial badger hair comes from remote areas of China where large badger populations endanger crops and livestock. The Chinese government licenses small village cooperatives to conduct the hunts and process the hair. The sale of badger hair provides co-op members with an additional source of income to augment their meager earnings from the land.

I dont really understand why they need to kill the badgers to harvest the hair for the brushes. Why cant they just shave the badgers to get the hair? I mean if you think about it, if they did it that way they would have an almost continuous supply of hair without the need to kill the badgers... Maybe I'm wrong tho, I mean I'm no expert or anything.

Are you suggesting we shave our badgers?

A good badger is a dead one, then shoved into a handle.

I wonder if they'd prefer to be lathered with a boar brush?

I know I would.:001_tongu

According to Wiki badgers are eaten in many parts of the world, so it would stand to reason those whose pelts are made into brushes would also be eaten.

So can we start getting a badger steak with our badger brushes? Kinda a bonus.

We have a dwindling population of Badgers here in the UK and from what I've seen of them they're evil little buggers when you upset them. They can give quite a nasty bite.

I would image trying to shave a Badger would be akin to trying to remove a thorn from a Lions paw

Very hard to imagine harvesting badger bristle without killing the animal. Maybe the guy is misinformed or maybe he just wants to paint a better picture of his own situation....

Now then I was always unsure about just where the hair came from before. Now I guess the gaps are filled in. I eat meat I love meat meat is good. I'm delighted to think that somebody killed a badger (hopefully in a humane dignified mannor) made some money from it's pelt then had dinner for their family from the carcas.

That said I hate to see them dead on the road and if I ever came across anyone badger baiting I'd find myself locked up for murder.

I'm blessed to live very near a badger set and enjoy seeing him from time to time.

I'm all for people using what they have around to help them but I hope for everyones sake they are managed properly.

Thanks OP for raising this issue.

Have you ever tried to play grab-*** with a badger? Trust me, you want the critter dead first. :biggrin1:

Sorry, I don't understand the concern. If we are willing to use leather from a cow that we have killed and eaten, then why are we concerned about using badger fur from an animal that is eaten. Isn't it better to use the fur then kill the animal and throw it away?
