HIPPA ..... for dogs?

I have an annual appt. for my lab today. Since his is on thyroid meds he is fasting. I had to call this morning to verify the time he is to take thyroid meds prior to a blood draw. In conversation, I mentioned my son would be bringing him as I do not drive. I was told I really need to accompany him.

Did you know it's now a law, at least in Missouri, that your dog cannot be treated by anyone other than the owner without prior signed authorization due to confidentiality?

I'm still shaking my head. Bravo to my yellow lab that his privacy is now protected and all the neighborhood dogs wont' know he'd have a seizure without his daily pills.

What a stupid law! We have a crazy woman down the street who adopts cats and dogs that she then neglects. Dogs tied outside for days without water, cats left without food, etc. I make a point of checking on them (this person lives in a van....the house is a dump with no utilities) and we've cared for one of the cats for years. Last time I was at the vet's, I asked about this cat as I wanted to be sure her shots were up-to-date. They told us about this idiotic ruling, but gave us the info anyway. I could care less about the owner, and the neglected animals should not lack care because of her actions.

I agree with you gentlemen. This crap is driving me crazy. I never thought I would see my beloved profession take this path.

wow, weird law. my sister-in-law is a vet so she looks after our lab when we need to get him checked out. i'll have to ask her about this cuz it just sounds so absurd

Congradulations to your dog. I guess that means that vets in Mo do not treat stray animals if they are injured or sick. Since their owner is not avaliable.

My dr's staff got really upset with me when I refused to accept all of their HIPPA and other forms. I just slid them back across the counter to the girl and said I was not interested in all of those papers and that she could keep them, throw them in the recycle bin, or give them to the next person who might want them. I was informed that she could not do that, that I had to take them. I politely informed her that my contribution to keeping medical cost down was to eliminate needless paperwork, and record retention expenses just as our fearless leader the president wanted. I was also working to reduce my dr's office expense, and I was doing it for their benifit.

Then I went and sat down in the waiting area.

The 4 others in the waiting area did seem to get quite a bit of amusement out of it.

I truely believe the world is going crazy... laws about laws, red tape all over the place...
legislative roadblocks in place to confound and confuse the public...
nobody cares about nobody
keep pushing them through...
some days it takes alot to keep smiling

my dogs make me happy..lol.. but I have stories.. ;)

When my son was an infant and my wife and I took him to a new pediatrician we received a stack of paperwork to sign such as insurance and emergency contact. In the stack was the paper saying that we had received and read the office's privacy policy, but no such policy was in the stack - so I when I handed in the paperwork and they saw that we hadn't signed that form they told us we needed to sign it - then I told them that I wouldn't sign anything saying I'd been given information which I had not in fact been given. This took the staff aback and they acted as if no one had ever said such things to them. Then they had to actually hunt for this privacy policy so that I could read it. I think I was the first person to ask for it. My real concern was not the wording of the policy itself, just being asked to sign that I had read it when I hadn't. I guess people just blindly sign off on all kinds of things typically.

I hope my lab doesn't retain an attorney and sue me for breach of confidentiality by posting he saw his vetrinarian today.

I must admit, I was at mom's today and we were talking about the forum and this topic came up. I laughed my A@$ off when I realized that this post was in regards to my sweet Scooby dog. Funny stuff. A Dog??? I am not an animal lover but I was the one repeatedly faxing authorization to treat the dog without my mother there. LOL

Well there are people who think pets deserve lawyers for legal representation.

Those are the same types of people who waste time and money putting brick and mortar to things like doggy day spas. Things are getting ridiculous with people and their pets.
