Magic marker on a bevel being wiped off only tells you that are are making contact.
It does not tell you the quality of the contact.
It does not tell you how even the contact was
It does not tell you the condition of the apex.

Turn the edge straight up at your eye, with a very bright light reflecting off it, and tip the razor toward and away from you, slowly, as you study the reflections off the edge. There really shouldn't be any! Little sparklies mean that the apex is not there, that the bevel faces have not been brought properly together, and your work is not done. The sharpie test is an excellent diagnostic, but it is possible to see very good sharpie removal across the bevel, but still hot have a full bevel set. Go some more, on your bevel setter, if you see anything in way of reflections, on the upturned edge.
