HELP!!! Speick vs. Proraso vs. Thayers AS splashes and even Lucky Tiger

I am new to AS splashes. I have generally been using balms and creams but some helpful people here have convinced me to switch to a splash and then use a dedicated moisturizer. This makes sense and will most likely work best for me because of my skin. But I don't get this splash stuff. The Speick, Proraso, Thayers, and even Lucky Tiger all are alcohol based aftershaves. They all seem to contain nearly the same ingredients as well. They are all highly rated in the review section. How the hell am I suppose to choose? This is nuts! Its like the salad dressing isle at the supermarket, where do you even start? I have posted in an attempt to buy some samples, but if that doesn't materialize, then I am just going to have to take your guys advice on which bottle to get. If it helps, I would just hope the scent dissipates in an hour or so (but I am told most splashes do). Thank you in advance to all the professionals out there.....

Not to make things more difficult for you but you should add Musgo and L'Occitane (if you can still get it) to you're list. My top 3 so far are the two I mentioned above and Speick. I found great improvements in my skin after using any of these for a week straight. I also use the matching soaps to get the full effect.

I can't coment on the Lucky Tiger but have heard good things. The Thayers is a different beast and lack's some of the skin care ingredients the others have.

Good luck!

Like you I switched from balms to splashes. I've used Proraso and Speick and I would recommend Speick. It has ingredients that assist in healing your skin, such as alum and witch hazel, and has a nice subtle fragrance - I found the Proraso fragrance was a bit stronger.

I can't comment on Proraso since I haven't tried it yet.

For me, when I'm in Davis, I use Thayer's before anything else. It doesn't sting, and closes things up nicely. Its also dirt cheap, and usually locally available. Two big pluses.

When I'm in the bay area, I use Speick. It does sting, but that fades quickly and it leaves my skin feeling great. Even better than Thayer's. The unique thing about Speick is that it contains a certain herb (I can't remember the name) which no one else seems to have. (I'm sure I'll be corrected in short order if I'm wrong.)

Even the exact same ingredients, in different combinations and ratios, can be hugely different. The only solution is to try them all. Then you can make an educated decision about what to use on a regular basis.

Seriously, both Thayer's and Speick have devoted followings on here. I'd say they are both worth a try.

I have Tabac, Proraso and Speick aftershave splashes. All three are good but Speick is the clear winner for me; it's seriously good stuff.

To clarify, most people on here who use Thayers do not use Thayers Aftershave, which is just alcohol, witch hazel and a little aloe vera.

Most on here are using the alcohol free Thayers Toners, which can be used in addition to or instead of an aftershave splash. Some people also like the Superhazel, which is basically a topical pain reliever with camphor and 20% alcohol. I would recommend the alcohol free toners over anything else from Thayers.

Lucky Tiger makes two different products:

This - "after shave and face tonic" which doesn't contain alcohol at all:

And this, which is a high alcohol after shave with scent and a some propylene glycol:

This. By all means, try lots, but you must try these, preferably first. :thumbup1:

i'm working my way through a bottle of the proraso splash now. it's very good stuff in terms of healing and the scent is a barbershop scent. the one thing i don't particularly like about it is the menthol. it is cold after you apply it for about 5 minutes and that's just not really my thing. the healing properties are pretty good though and hasn't dried out my face much, which sometimes happens with splashes. alcohol content is pretty low but it does give a bit of a sting.

i've already decided that i'll be picking up a bottle of Speick after I'm done with the proraso. the proraso is good stuff but because of the menthol i'm going to try the Speick next. If it's anywhere near to their soap, i'm excited. the soap is incredible!

Thanks for clarifying that. I noticed as well that the Thayers AS was mostly alcohol with aloe. I guess that one is crossed off the list. I have used the Thayers with rose water toner, but I just wasn't too impressed.

Sounds like Speick is in the lead so far. I am not to concerned with the sting as long as it fades within a few seconds. Hopefully some others will chime in as well. Thanks everyone!
