Help me choose a lime shaving product.....

Gentlemen, I would really like to purchase a lime shaving cream or soap. Castle Forbes is not the answer.

Please help me choose from the following:

1) T&H West Indian Limes cream

2) Trumper's Limes cream

3) Trumper's Limes soap

4) Mama Bear's Spicey Lime soap

What do you think? Other suggestions are OK, too, as long as they are not Cyril Salter or Castle Forbes.

Thanks in advance.

I recommend Mama Bear's Lime Ice shaving soap. It has a genuine lime scent along with a nice cooling effect. I also use her Lime Summer Ice Milk along with the soap.

Now, don't kill me, but:

KMF Key Limes

I have tried CF, T&H, and GFT lime creams, and KMF's scent beats them all, while its performance is on par with T&H and GFT. I think CF's performance was a cut abaove, once I figured out the lather, but its smell was not impressive at all.

I recently acquired J.M. Fraser's Original Shaving Cream from Shaving Essentials along with the matching aftershave, Booster's Iced Lime. The smell is really citrus and makes a great, thick lather. You get a 450 ml (15.2 oz) tub for $12.42 plus $5.00 shipping. The Booster's aftershave (14 oz) is $9.98. That would be $27.40 for both including shipping. These are Canadian products which have been around since 1920. If you decide to try them and end up regretting the choice, let me know. I'll be glad to take them off your hands!

Does this stuff smell like Castle Forbes? If so, I have to take it off my list. I much prefer a more complex lime scent like I get from T&H or Trumper's.

Err, I dunno. I have never smelled CF. Contact John - he could probably send a sample, especially if you added something else to the cart.

A friend of mine sent me a sample from his pot. It was very clear lime - I wouldn't call it complex I suppose. Anyone else have both that could compare?

Guys, I have tried Castle Forbes. I understand that some of you worship the ground it sits upon. I love the shave it provides, but the pure lime EO scent of Castle Forbes is not my cup of tea; it reminds me of shoe polish.

I don't want to be reminded of shoe polish every morning when I shave.

I would greatly prefer a shaving cream or soap that smelled kind of like Penhaligon's Extract of Limes EDC. Something like that would be perfect.

I have Trumpers Limes SOAP on the go at the moment and it is really good.

Let me repeat that it is really good.

I live in a hard water area and the lather is as good as you can get. The limes is refreshing and the protection is perfect. It doesn't dry out, it leaves the face feeling clean and it doesn't linger.

Don't really know what else to say.

Oh, did I say it is really really good.

It's soap, how complex does it need to be? I'd say if you weren't impressed with the CF you're probably not going to be very impressed with any of the other high end Lime soaps or creams. They're all good in their own ways, but most of them lack the same type of complexity that you would find in their cologne/EdT counterparts. Save a little cash and try these before you start going all Trumpers and T&H.

I've never heard of lime shoe polish!

The Gentlemans Quarterly has a Lime Margarita shaving soap.

Just to make sure you understand what I'm saying, I'll clarify. If lime EO is the only scent in the cream/soap, I'm not interested in it. The scent doesn't have to have top notes, middle notes, and basenotes, but it has to have something besides straight lime EO.
I'd say if you weren't impressed with the CF you're probably not going to be very impressed with any of the other high end Lime soaps or creams.
Turns out this is not true, either, in two ways. One, I am impressed with CF lime, just not with the scent. I think the performance is amazing. Two, I've tried both T&H and Trumpers in the cream forms and sample sizes, and I was highly impressed with both of them. I liked the scents of both of them a lot better than CF Lime.

OK, in the Castle Forbes cream I can smell the lime scent on the top, for sure, but there is something in the background that smells just like the smell you get when you are brushing the shoe after you have applied polish. I don't know what it is, but it is definitely there.

I'm not the only one who smells it, either. Others have described it as something like a chemical in a cleaning product, or some such, but they're smelling the same thing.

Only lime product i have tried was trumpers aftershave and i was very dissapointed in that as the scent dissapeared after a few minites:frown:

Tried them all and they are not in the same league as GFT.

Which GFT products have you actually used?

Of course their not in the same "league" as GFT. They cost a fraction of the price of GFT, so I would expect the Trumpers lime to offer a little more. Still nothing so transcendental about Trumpers Limes as to suggest that it's more "complex" than any of the above products I mentioned, scent wise. And a better question would be "what GFT products haven't I used?"

I think both you and the OP mistakenly believe that I'm saying that the products I listed are better performers than the high dollar soaps or cremes. I'm not getting into that fight either way, I'm just saying that it's a lime soap- don't expect a multi-faceted olfactory experience. These lime creams are about as complex to me as the Trumpers and the T&H. If your blood bleeds blue and you want to start plunking down 60 or 70 bucks on a soap or cream that you probably aren't going to like, then by all means shoot yourself in the foot.
